The organic food thing

    Unit of analysis problem here ... "We" have a better diet than we did hundreds/thousands of years ago because of the advancement of science. "I", on the other hand, can eat myself into disease because these advancements have made so much more food so readily available. One doesn't rule out the other.

    We have friends where it's a similar case. They've been married for 12 years or so. She's white. He's Indian. They're both doctors. They're both Sikh (she converted). What's funny is when she converted, she became more religious than him. He cut his hair when he was in college, but she wants their son to be more "traditional" and I think he's fine with his son being very americanized, because he's very americanized. It's kind of interesting to watch... She doesn't eat red meat, which I think is more cholesterol-related than anything religious. He eats well at home, but every time I'll ride with him somewhere, he'll stop off at the gas station and get nachos.

    My sister-in-law is similar. She's an Italian-American Catholic who married an Armenian guy and ever since she's super into everything Armenian short of System of a Down. She visits the Armenian Orthodox Church, is really devoted to spreading awareness of the genocide and makes Armenian food all the time. Her husband is really laid back about everything. I think the only time I've heard him talk Armenia at any length was one time saying he was embarrassed the Kardashians Armenian and he'd much rather eat our mother-in-law's Italian food than Armenian food.

    Maybe I'm wrong.
    Maybe it's the local and in-season that makes it taste better.

    It depends where you live... Florida or California, sure...

    This is true. But how many years does it gain you? And how much satisfaction did you lose? And how do you measure satisfaction? Everybody's a little different on that.

    I know a few organic food diehards who smoke, for example. It's surely not for the health benefits.

    Yeah, I love the people who won't touch red meat, but they smoke cloves...

    Growing up in California, you could walk up to a tree pull off a plum or a peach and it would be 100X better than anything you could ever buy in a store. It's not because it's organic, it's because it's tree ripened.

    Yep. Nothing tastes as good as fresh-picked produce. Organic has nothing to do with it.
