I'm not ready or willing to predict Condi Rice gets the job.

But, it would be interesting. Finding someone the owners trust, who has not been groomed for the job will be extremely hard.

Each commissioner was basically the obvious heir apparent. Even former NHL commissioner came over from the NBA.

I could even soo them doing something like a Bud Selig move. Maybe someone like Steve Tisch takes over on a "temporary" basis.

TMZ tosses some more fuel on the fire, because why not?

For next, I say they go from the corporate world -- after all, added up they're a conglomerate to rival Apple -- and maybe they go with a woman.

Carly Fiorina (ex-HP) or Carol Bartz (ex-Yahoo)? Or maybe Darla Moore, the Wall Street biggie and one of the first two women (Condi being the other) to become a member at Augusta National?

Or they could go Chelsea Clinton. She's available.

Given the reparations her handmaiden history owes the country, we'll pass.

You know how you know that piece wasn't written by one of the league's regular reporters (Mort, Schef, PK, et al)?

BECAUSE THERE'S A FUCKING NAME ATTACHED TO A QUOTE.

I could see Fiorina, or even someone like Meg Whitman. The key will be personal contacts. Who among the owners knows them, and can vouch for them.

If this goes down, they're going to have to act fast, and no league has had to hire a commissioner fast in a long time.

The NFL is reeling, and needs to stabilize things quickly. I liken it to when Warren Buffett stepped in to serve as Chairman of Salomon Brothers, which saved them at the time, and kept the stock market from crashing.

Who has the gravitas to do that, and has the owner's trust?

Roger has to be saying "Get me the fuck out of here. I have turned the NFL into a bumbling circus. I got a couple hundred mill in the bank. Adios, whores."

Goodell is a micromanager. If the league did a thorough investigation, there isn't a chance he didn't see that tape. He is on top of EVERY aspect of every one of these investigations.

I suspect Goodell really didn't see the tape -- even though, apparently everyone and their uncle saw the it. He was probably told, through a grapevine, "You don't want to see this tape." So he turned a blind eye, and purposely never let it get anywhere near him -- miscalculating he could then minimize the incident and get away with the 2-game suspension.

The only thing I can think of is that the law enforcement source from the AP really sent the tape to someone in the league office -- on his own. And as a result, the whole "plausible deniability" thing Goodell was counting on with that letter he wrote to the owner has now blown up in his face.

He has mismanaged this thing beyond belief.

Wow. That was short by your standards.

Seriously, though, that scenario you suggest makes a lot of sense. And there is no doubt Goodell botched this thing badly.

Chelsea Clinton and Carly Fiorina are about equally qualified. They've served as CEOs for the same number of profitable viable companies. If the NFL is looking to reduce roster sizes to 26 players, cut the schedule to 10 games, and contract 20 franchises, Fiorina is right up their alley.
