The school has handled the whole thing badly and they really should have seen trouble from DiRienzo coming.

School should have pointed the coach to the door and told him if he didn't like Rice's jersey taken down, he can walk through the door and not let it hit him in the ass on the way out.

Sounds like the principal was on the same side as the coach. The order came from the superintendent of schools:

New Rochelle High School Head Football Coach Louis DeRienzo threatened to resign as football coach if Ray Rice's #5 high school jersey was taken down from a wall in the school's gymnasium, sources say.

The threat reportedly came after the central office of the City School District of New Rochelle transmitted instructions to Reggie Richardson the high school's principal to remove Rice's jerseys, images and his Wall of Fame plaque from the school the day after a video was release which showed Rice assaulting his then-finance now-wife Janay Palmer.

These sources were unsure who exactly gave the order but Richardson reports directly to Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne.

A meeting was held at New Rochelle High School to discuss the District's response to the controversial video. While the exact discussion at the meeting was not known by these sources, among those in attendance were said to be Richardson, DeRienzo, and New Rochelle School District Athletic Director Steve Young.

In a statement which appeared in USA TODAY, Young said the removal of the #27 Ravens jersey was not permanent.

As part of a compromise, Rice's #27 Baltimore Ravens jersey was removed but the high school jersey remained. A third jersey, Rice's #27 Rutgers University jersey was also allowed to remain hanging in the weight room used by the football team.

A photograph and plaque of Ray Rice on the school's Wall of Fame was removed at Richardson's direction. Students took matters into their own hands, putting up their own "Wall of Fame" photograph of Rice.

To paraphrase Dick Cheney, "So?" You know how many fucking educators are laid off by budget cuts right now, coach? You know how many people will be lined up for your job is you do resign? Go fist yourself, coach.

Florio reports that Rice will appeal his indefinite suspension tomorrow. Goodell will have to replaced as judge, as he will be a witness.

    Christine Brennan (Puke):

In the midst of the massive Ray Rice controversy, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been doing quite a bit of letter writing to the league's teams, most of it on the topic of domestic violence.

He sent another Monday morning, announcing the names and extensive credentials of four women who will help shape the league's policies on domestic violence and sexual assault in the days ahead.

Critics will call this another public-relations move designed to save Goodell's job.

I'm not so sure about that. On the contrary, if the NFL follows through seriously with the initiatives it is proposing, the people who are calling for Goodell to resign might find instead that they have no greater ally on the causes they hold dear.

If the past three weeks are an indication, Goodell seems determined to bring change. We know the torrent of criticism over the handling of the Rice case and videos has been the catalyst, but still, I can't recall another league becoming so serious so fast about an off-the-field issue.

Are women/girls who grow up in poverty, and who are exposed to violence on a regular basis, more likely to see violence directed towards them as acceptable?
