Will K barely acknowledges the west exists, much less has an outstanding record at the CWS the past five years and throughout history.

Boyd Nation's ISR has CSUF and ASU. Wouldn't surprise me to see them in the finals, now that ASU's issues with starting pitching have been resolved with Spenece's return.

College World Series dates and times have been released:

Southern Miss really looks out of place in that bracket, doesn't it?

The fan in me hopes the Shorthorns are thinking along those same lines around 6 o'clock Sunday. ;)

Cal St. Fullerton, Virginia, North Carolina, Southern Miss.

Even though Texas is looking really good right now, I can't seem to put down the Southern Miss. Cinderella story.

Kevin Costner's alma mater is got to be a heavy favorite for those in the know. They can mash, they can pitch and they've been to Omaha before. They've won four titles (last in '04, which was the only time Smoke took the Tigahs to quote Jesus Muscatel to Rosenblatt) and have sent 43 players to the bigs.

I like that team A LOT.

LSU is going to be tough, but if they have a series of boneheaded errors like they had in Game 1 against Rice, no pun intended, they're going to be cooked. They're lucky to not be dead and buried.

As much as it pains me to say, I'd beware of Virginia. They seem to be getting hot at the right time and must have some awfully good pitching.

ASU getting Spence back helps tremendously. It was an arm short with him gone. But Murphy's ability to overthink and screw everything up would scare me if I were a Sun Devils' fan.

Maybe Texas can win and Augie can get the DUII hat trick while driving home after the post-championship party as a going-away party.

I think USM and Arkansas might be 2-and-out.

    Basically, anybody but Carolina.

Southern Miss will be the media darlings in Omaha.

Southern Miss will be the fans' sentimental favorite in Omaha.

Southern Miss has been playing with house money for a while now, which is one of the reasons I thought they had a real shot at Florida. The same thing holds true now.

But they open with the Shorthorns. Tough draw, indeed.

Incidentally, I think the NCAA determines where teams stay in Omaha, and Southern Miss has been sent to the Sleep Inn and Suites in Council Bluffs, Iowa. And get this, it's $209, a night, plus fucking tax.

I perused hotel prices in Omaha after seeing this, and it's unfuckingbelievable, how much they're charging.

Ron Polk got sent to Council Bluffs once with Mississippi State, and they checked out the next day and found someplace else.

Lots of papers will probably send their guys to the KOA these days. Take a pup tent, a bag lunch and a bar of soap, motherfucker, you're set.

Council Bluffs is, not to put too fine a point on it, a shithole.

Well ** my old paper isn't even going. Going to use stuff from sister paper in Charlottesville.
Never mind that this is a pretty big story in these parts. CWS teams from Virginia? One previously, JMU in 1983.
Never mind, too, that a huge chunk of the team is from Richmond.
That was the decision made yesterday. No-maha. I hope like hell it has been reconsidered.

Is the dogtrack still open, Armchair? We always used to kill a night or even two there during a long-ass stay at the CWS. I know they shut down the horsetrack in Omaha a long time ago.

Always liked the clientele at the dog track ...

Why was the Texas guy barking at the TCU guys after his first-inning homer yesterday? I was watching with sound off in the gym.
