I, too, woould like to see it succeed. And I'm for anything to might turn me on to some good writing and reading. But I can't stand reading more than a couple hundred words on a computer at a time (insert Ragu joke here). That's likely going to limit my trips there.

Then print out the columns and read them on the shitter. That seems to be a trick many Simmons fans employ.

Yeah, I'm sure the missus wouldn't like you pulling a scheiza with stuff she probably uses.

They offer it free on Kindle, and I'll think about it. ;)

I guess Simmons fans do not have a social conscience when it comes to the environment, .

One would have to be severely constipated to be able to finish a Simmons column on the toilet. Even thinking about it makes me hurt.

I don't know how ambitious this is. It's not like the presence of Grantland takes space away from anything else ESPN has to offer. It's not like Simmons isn't already a really strong brand (!!!!!). It's a bunch of longform writers, journalists and bloggers who have already made a name for themselves elsewhere. They're not exactly mining a crew of unknowns here.

It's really set up to succeed wildly. I expect that every story will be dissected here, as a lot of writing is. And I also expect there will be a good amount of turnover, just because it's tough to keep so many talented people feeling like they're making a worthwhile contribution.

The previews, with any luck, were not indicative. At least, the movies one.

The dissection here at SJ could be as entertaining a read as Grantland itself.

I'd like to see a story in Grantland today on how ESPN is wrecking college sports.

There is no way I don't come off looking like an grumpy old man here, and I really want this thing to work, too. Anything that gives writers a platform -- sometimes for long form, no less -- is OK with me.

But "Welcome to Grantland" by Simmons is exactly why I don't get Simmons. The "Welcome to Grantland," such as it is, basically comes after 2150 words.

I guess this is simply a hole in my "writers you like" resume, and absolutely no disrespect to Bill, who has obviously earned a lot of what he's got. But he's just not "me."
