Bill Simmons as the imprimateur of Grantland is like Keanu Reeves as the face of Inside the Actors Studio. His writing isn't literature or at least decent runs of literature, unlike many of his contributors. If he doesn't step back a bit, he will take what could be a thoughtful sight and turn it into another frat-boy hang on the Net. And enough of the entries from handles, as opposed to real or real-sounding names.

Here's a loaded question, because obviously Simmons is not your typical sportswriter, but is he the most famous sportswriter in the country?

Good one, especially since I've been out of the business for three years now and never got higher on the totem pole than a NFL writer.

I was late to the party on Simmons, but I'd venture to say, yes, he's the most famous sportswriter in the country right now.

Oh, it's fine... After I announced on here that I had been let go, a former poster PMd me and said, "You got what you deserve. This is proof there is a god."

After that, I can deal with just about anything... :D

So far it seems like they haven't met the standard, unless they want to be compared to Entertainment Weekly.

Funny going back and looking at some of the early predictions on this thread. Grantland was being heralded as the return of the long form. It's early but so far they are failing in their quest.

He has to be up there, although I imagine Rick Reilly might have him beat. With Reilly, you have a lot of older people who would never read Simmons simply because of his medium, and the newer generation of readers probably at least knows who he is because he's on the front page of ESPN.com.

Reilly? I would love to see the difference in traffic between the two of them. My guess is it wouldn't be close.
