A four-point referees’ guide to diving was unveiled by British psychologist Dr. Paul Morris, detailing how players make a spectacle of themselves to win a penalty or earn an opponent a yellow or red card.
The main obvious signs are:
• Clutching their body where they have not been hit;
• Taking an extra roll when they hit the ground;
• Taking fully controlled strides after being tackled before falling;
• Holding up both arms in the air, with open palms, chest thrust out, legs bent at the knee in an “archer’s bow” position.
Morris, who specializes in how people show emotions and intentions, said: “Referees have a very difficult job and given the demands of the task, they do it remarkably well.
“We think even experienced professionals could enhance their decision-making by studying the categories of deceptive behavior we have identified,” added Morris, of the Universiy of Portsmouth in southern England.
Morris said the “archer’s bow” was one of the most revealing as the body would not make such a “peculiar” shape in a natural fall.
“In most dishonest tackles, the behavior itself does not indicate dishonesty, the deception is revealed in the timing and co-ordination of the behaviors,” he explained.
“But one action is unique to a faked fall — the archer’s bow. This occurs in many dives, but biomechanically it does not occur in a natural fall. Instead, instinctively the arms either go down in an attempt to cushion the fall or out to the side for balance.”

I do believe the guy working the Man U-Beskitas game for FSN was the worst soccer announcer I've ever heard, and that includes the guys on FSC that everybody likes to mock. He sounded like he was doing the game from a fishbowl, he had no enthusiasm. Derek Rae made those games feel important. This felt like a low-level Cup game.

Not that strong, actually.
If you're going to have a Brit for the sake of having a Brit, he ought to have an accent like the gekko in the Geico commericals.

From the AP wire:

NEW YORK (AP) _ Major League Soccer will take a two-week break during the group phase of the World Cup for the first time next summer.
MLS announced on Wednesday it will not play any games from June 11-25. The league also does not plan to schedule games on the days of the World Cup semifinals and final.
"The league has changed; the country has changed,’’ MLS president Mark Abbott said. "There’s a large and growing fan base for professional football.’’
The length of the MLS season will not change. Each team will probably play an additional midweek game to make up for the missed time.

Not sure if it should go here or the video games thread, but the FIFA 10 demo is out. Just played a 3-minute halves match as Juventus against Chicago, won on kicks. I didn't buy 09, just downloaded the demo, but this year's game feels more natural. I'll probably buy it, even though I have no money, when it comes out in October.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 also has a demo out. I'm about to start playing that now.

Rangers pulled out a draw when their central defender, Madjid Bougherra, made a run forward, got in the box and cracked a rocket of a shot past Lehmann. It was surprisingly well struck.

I watched the game up in the Niagara Falls area as I'm up in Buffalo this week. Good times with the lads.

More games today, I'll just need to find a way to sneak watching the game while "working."
