That is simply not true. An offside offense can be called on any player who "gains an advantage" by being in an offside position when the ball is played, such as forcing the defense to account for him or screening the goalie.

That's one of the three times a player in an offside position can be called for an offside offense. The other two are when he plays the ball and when he obstruct the movement of an opponent.

Is there any way we can arrange another tournament so Robbie Rogers can be allowed to remain excused from the Crew?
    Good gracious, is he awful.
I cannot believe Bradley left him on the field for 90 minutes. Rogers is soft as marshmallow creme, as accurate as the Weekly World News and as tough as pea soup. His weak-kneed backpass led to the penalty call, and his garbage finish on a clear chance cost the U.S. a chance at a 1-0 lead.
It's on Bradley for playing the same hand after Rogers (Arnaud, too) stunk it up in four consecutive games. We've got to learn something from this.

Things I liked about yesterday’s game:

A tailgate that began at 10am.
    Hanging out with my friends.
    Playing dominoes before the game.
The first half of the game.

    Things I didn’t like about yesterday’s game:
The second half of the game.
The bottles that were thrown down on us.
The bottle that hit the guy next to me in the head.
The guy that sucker punched one of us in the lot.
The Mexican fan that decided to use his belt as a weapon since he’s too much of a coward to just fight.
Driving my friend’s car to the hospital so that he would be able to get home after getting a few staples in his head.

Prior to the game and even afterwards, there were a few Mexican fans that were just being cool. They chanted, we chanted. A few talked to me while on line for the bathroom. But those nasty others (and they seemed like the majority) are fuckers.

Give us a percentage of Mexican/USA fans that were there.

It felt like a 95/5 split.

There were even dickhead Mexican fans trying to stand in Sam's Army.

Inside and outside the cops were nowhere to be found. Fucking guy is bleeding and the cops are there about 20 minutes later.

Were these glass bottles? And if they were, what the hell were glass bottles doing in that stadium?

In the stadium it was plastic... and full. Outside the stadium... glass.

Sadly, the Mexican fans were walking through our area looking for a fight. It was one of the most pathetic, poor winner sights I may have ever seen.

My opinion of Mexican fans has been greatly diminished.

I referee games, Rick. And in the referee classes I took, this was specifically pointed out. Repeatedly. If you are in an offside position and I'm not and someone plays me the ball, play continues.

But like Piotr pointed out, this rule is interpreted 100 different ways and usually screwed up at least once a game. I've seen it botched in games I've coached more times than I care to remember.

Either the level you ref has different rules than international competitions, or your classes sucked. As has been mentioned, there have been many major goals called back for offside infractions where the offside player did not touch the ball.

With all the alcohol flowing and Mexicans anxious to let off some steam from past failures, I had a feeling it wouldn't end well for anyone wearing red. I think some of the blame for the heavy crowd distribution in favor of Mexico has to be laid at the feet of CONCACAF. They did nothing to promote this tournament with the USA in mind. I mean, if I'm hearing ticket commercials for the Gold Cup final on Spanish radio stations in Ohio, what chance did the USA ever have of squeezing any favorable supporters in that place?

yes, if they are in the play. If they are not involved in the play such as being on the other side of the field it is not offside.
