No, Rick. The classes were taught under FIFA rules.

And yes, I'm aware of the goals called back. I'm also aware those AR's screwed the pooch on the calls.

    Exactly.

I've always hated this rule. How can you see that someone is truly passive if the keeper or the defenders are distracted even in part? As a Manchester United fan, I watched RVN frequently position himself offsides as a free kick was about to be taken. Often, he would dart back before the kick, but sometimes he'd stay offsides and then move away from the goal after the kick was taken so as to be "passive". It seems against the spirit of the rule.

I think that, unless the player is completely out of the play due to injury or something similar, they should take the discretion out of the rule and call the infraction.

Define "involved in the play" as taught in your classes? Because now I'm confused, you just said "exactly" to JC saying exactly what I've been saying.

You don't have to touch the ball to be considered "in the play."

Sigh. I explained it earlier, but here goes again.

Was the ball played to you in an offside position? If not, did you enter the play, i.e. have a subsequent ball played to you from an onside player BEFORE you became onside -- if you became onside?

    That's how it was taught.

That's all true, but not what what I was talking about earlier.

The issue was can you or can you not be called for an offside infraction without having the ball played to you?

Everything I've read indicates the answer is yes, and I was under the impression you are disagreeing with that point.

    GK

    A1
    D1 D2 A2

    A3

Forgive my crude mockup. Let's say A3 is the man with the ball. He feeds it through to A2, who is onside. A1 is offside, but not receiving the ball.

But if, in the assistant referee's opinion, A1 is distracting D1 from defending the play, thereby giving his team an advantage from being in an offside position, the flag should go up.

Naturally, that's dependent on the assistant referee, which is where the subjectivity is introduced.

According to Ives, Ricardo Clark could be moving to Livorno in Serie A:

    Ask McHead.
He didn't touch the ball on DeMarcus' goal.
    But he got nailed.

    Thank you, Desk.

Your last sentence is the money graf. I know when I AR games, I don't call it unless A1 makes his presence felt in the play. Not that I'm a great ref or anything, but talking to those who are, that's the correct play.

And Beasley got hosed on that goal. Said it then and say it now.

Notice how they win 5-0 and now it's free for all to see.

Can't wait for their substandard standard definition broadcast!

Hey, some MLS talk for those of you seeking it ...
Anybody know why the reigning MLS champions are not part of the CONCACAF Champions League?
Seems kind of silly to me.
