    No doubt. Similar things were happening while I was working in the UAE, even in lower-profile sports like cricket, jiu-jitsu, and distance running. We were technically state-run media at the time, though, so we weren't allowed to ask too many questions about an athlete's citizenship lest we annoy the wrong sheikh.

    In fairness to these countries, when the locals are only the third- or fourth-largest nationality in their own country and the domestic talent pool is comparatively tiny (there are only about 300,000 Qataris and 1.1 million Emiratis), unusual measures are sometimes necessary. As the UAE is learning the hard way, a 'golden generation' is no guarantee of success.
