The Star-Ledger Sports Section

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Minnesota4Ever, Feb 16, 2007.

  1. Rutgers football coverage was awesome. No question. They did a great job on their big game against Louisville. They did a whole week of preparing us for this game. My thing is that the women's hoops coverage used to be very good, but the paper has cut back on that. Maybe Rutgers is not that good this year, but to cut down on it is not very good. Devils coverage used to be good. I am sure Chere is a doing a fine job, but the point of that matter is that there are only few lines on the Devils. I can understand the lack of Nets coverage since they are moving to Brooklyn and the fact that they are just not very good. Also no one cares about the Nets here now that they are leaving.

I missed the way it used to be. The Star-Ledger was really hardcore at covering sports especially in the late ninteies and from 2000 to 2005. Things just changed the last few months.

  2. Politi does not cut it for me. He is only good when he is negative such as you saw the last two days with his column on Tiki and Bernie. I did not care for him writing all week about how the Rutgers football team were ready to dissapoint their fans against West Virginia and he seemed to revel in it.

I don't really have point of reference on what the Star-Ledger used to be like, but I really enjoyed reading the Rutgers stuff while I was there. I think I remember a centerpiece on women's basketball, but that was a couple of months ago and I wasn't too interested in reading it.

Man, if a thread ever started like this about my department, I think I'd get in bed, pull the sheets over my head and not come out for a few days. :-\

  6. That centerpiece features the team struggling to win games along with the fact one of Stringer's associates decided to use Stringer's credit card and spent all that money.

  7. It's okay, but nothing special either. Their sports coverage is very short.

I used to like Wojnarnowski till he started to use his column as a forum to rip anyone. I am glad he is gone and I know most subscribers here couldn't stand the guy.

Ian O'Connor does not do much for me either.

I wish Klapisch would just go away.

My biggest question for the starter of the thread is this: Are you disappointed in the way the Star-Ledger sports section is going, or just sad?

Any other Jersey papers on whom you'd like to give the cleveland steamer treatment? I think you left the Morris paper unscathed.

Note to Brandon Walsh: Come back when you've got half the chops of Wojo, Klapisch and O'Connor. And no, I am not, etc etc. But I get a kick out of someone coming on here and taking a giant crap on one of the most accomplished 1-2 columnist punches in the nation.
