Deskslave, give it up... .I cited the rule, you cited the rule, you cited Charles Bloom's explanation...

It's just a conspiracy by the SEC to keep alabama unbeaten.

By the way, if anyone's unclear on this, I'm a GEORGIA fan. So I'm not exactly champing at the bit for opportunities to defend SEC refs.

I just hope the people bitching about the helmet call not being made aren't the same people upset about the celebration penalties in that Georgia game that were called.

Personally, I think Kiffin is just trying to make a stink about the quality (or lack thereof) of the SEC officials. His team was penalized 9-1 in the game, with several calls that could've went on Bama that went uncalled.

He's chirped about it in 24-hours....

He said the reason he didnt try to move the ball downfield further was that he didnt want to see an Alabama sack/tipped ball or for the officials to have a chance to throw a (and I'm not sure on how exact this quote is) "a mysterious magic flag" for a holding call.

He then said tonight, "I am sure I will get one of those letters that really means nothing as Bobby (Petrino) got last week, but Florida and Alabama live on."

It's almost like he's begging for a fine...

On the decision to kick the 44-yarder....

I am sure he's second-guessing himself, he even said it last night....but if you'd have told him and every UT fan that "You will hold Alabama out of the end zone all day, hold Ingram to 99 yards - but you have to kick a 44-yard field goal to beat them" would've taken the deal every day of the week.

Plus....while 44-yards isnt "automatic" in college; thats pretty automatic in the NFL. Maybe he's still in that mindset.

First, the idea that he didn't want to run any more plays because of a "mysterious magic flag" is an awful excuse. If he was thinking about that, he wouldn't have been fist-pumping when they got into the 44-yard range.

And using the penalty disparity is bad logic too. That assumes that both teams committed the same number of infractions, or in a similar range. That's not always the case.

Kiffin screwed up. He had 50 seconds and, if I remember right, at least one timeout. Why he didn't take a shot or two down the field I don't know, though I'd guess he was probably lacking some confidence in Crompton, who isn't exactly Mr. Reliable. But I don't care who your kicker is. You're on the road, you've already had a kick blocked, and it's the last chance you'll have. Forty-four yards isn't the worst case scenario, but they had a chance to make the situation a lot easier.

Just thought I'd repost this since some have reading and logic comprehension troubles.

"You run another play and throw an interception,'' he (Kiffin) said, "or, they throw another flag on us. I wasn't going to let the refs lose the game for us there. You know, a magical flag appear.

"At that point, it's nine penalties to one. We're the second-least-penalized team in the country going into the game. They're 60th in the country. And you go down there and it's very disappointing to have nine flags thrown against you and one against them.''

Second-least, yada yada. Whatever. I'm not saying the officiating is perfect, and I'm also not dismissing the fact that the SEC has a suspicious officiating history in games involving title contenders.

But if a head coach let that dictate the game, he's an idiot. Kiffin's choice was a gamble. He lost. Plain and simple.

He had about 35 seconds and no timeouts.

Anybody see the BCS rankings - they have Iowa number 1 in the computers - well ahead of Texas. I don't think Texas's schedule is going to move them past Iowa if both teams win out. I realize the humans will determine the final match-up, but it makes you wonder.
