I haven't watched much of that show even though I kinda liked what I saw, but the mixed up dates don't really bother me. He's reflecting and people have messed up memories about that kind of stuff. I was talking to some old friends the other day and two of us were absolutely sure we listened to a certain song before basketball games in 7th grade. The third guy wasn't sure it was that year so he looked it up and the song came out two years later.

The sports references are the ones I catch the most that make it so obvious that things aren't lining up. There was one where the oldest son says he's thankful for Darryl Dawkins (show takes place in Philly) and then someone makes a reference to the movie Cocktail. Dawkins on the 76ers and Cocktail... That's a good 5-6 years or so apart.

The Bo Jackson reference jumped out at me because I was at the game when the Raiders played the Niners in 1988 and that was Jackson's second NFL season.

With a lot of movies, music and sports that came out or happened when I was growing up, I have a pretty good memory of what happened and what grade I was in at the time. If you asked me what year some movie came out in the last 15 years, I'd have a harder time remembering than seeing Karate Kid and knowing that came out in 1984 because when my grandmother died that year, our parents took my cousins and I to see it even though we had all seen it multiple times and that the Olympics were on at the same time.

Never had any desire to watch The Goldbergs and those inaccuracies would drive me up a wall.

If you're going to do nostalgia, do it right. Don't go for the cheap references that are a mile wide and an inch deep.

I think we discussed it before, but the same thing happened to me just watching part of episode.
I was ages 10-20 from 1980 to 1990, and I grew up in the Delaware Valley. Things struck me watching the program - 'That didn't happen at the same time!'

Right, I think if you grew up during that time period stuff jumps out at you a little more.

That was the same criticism that was going around about The Wedding Singer. I noticed stuff like that, but I didn't let it ruin my enjoyment of the movie.

The Goldbergs looks unbelievably stupid for many reasons and I haven't watched one second other than the commercials for it, but I don't see timeline being a deal-breaker.

Ah, it's actually kinda sweet in a Wonder Years way.

Shows like that and "The Middle" aren't ever going to win awards, but they're a nice diversion.

It's not a deal-breaker, but I usually have at least one, "Oh, c'mon!" moment when I watch it and they're talking about something that happened in 1982 and 1987 in the same show.

It's not as good as Wonder Years, but it is good.

From creator Adam Goldberg (sounds intellectually lazy to me, but who cares - it's a teevee show):

"Historically there are so many inaccuracies, I’m not even sticking to a particular year, which I think some people are having problems with. But I’m not doing 'Mad Men' here where every year is going to introduce a new style. It’s just like I can’t wait nine years to have a Power Glove in 1989. So the stories I see fit, the things I remember from different years; I don’t even remember what year things were, I don’t remember what year I won 'Legend of Zelda.' But, you know, I want to do a story about it, so I can’t be limited by the year.
