Spent the past few days catching up with the CBS season starters -- 3 episodes of "NCIS" and 2 of "NCIS Hawaii," which I missed.

"NCIS" continues to be a great show. But very confusing that actress Katrina Law, formerly of "Hawaii 50," shows up in a similar role but different name, not like she transferred from Hawaii to Virginia. Then it's followed by "NCIS Hawaii," which can also be confused with "Hawaii 50," which had Katrina Law in the cast. Silliness.

Not sure about "NCIS Hawaii" yet. A little too fast and difficult to identify all the characters. But I only saw two episodes. Why does the lead woman have to talk in a low, bad-ass voice (like Jack Webb in Dragnet), just like Tim Kang, formerly of "The Mentalist" and currently in -- taaaa daaaa -- "Magnum PI."

As a fan of the Alphabet book series, I'm a bit torn knowing that Sue Grafton was always adamant that her books were not to be adapted for TV or movies. However, I would love to see how a real live Kinsey Millhone would play out, and who they would get to play her. If it gets made, I'll definitely be watching.
Hope they don't try to adapt the character into the modern day, though. I always thought a small charm of the novels was watching a PI gather info and evidence in the days before the high technology of computers and smartphones.

Squid Game was ... compelling. Not certain I really liked it but I did burn through it pretty quickly so it clearly had my attention.

I've never watched NCIS before, so I added Hawai'i to the DVR. I'm not really getting into it. I think it's because I just can't relate to the location, having never been there and not understanding the jargon.

I recorded the CSI: Vegas series premiere, and I wonder if that'll go the same way. I've only watched the local version.

As far as the Law & Order franchise, I loved the U.K. edition. I watched the first season of Organized Crime, but I think I'm done with that too.

Meanwhile, I'm hooked on all the FBIs... though I may only be using International as a travelogue. It's a lot to try to tune into all three in a row though.

Not sure Survivor this year is worth a thread of its own - its one of those years where the weaker players are banding together and voting out the better players. Some really dumb decisions so far - particularly since the marginal players are suddenly feeling pret ty confident about their idiotic decision-making. It also seems to be one of those years where everyone has an inspirational/tragic backstory.

There are too many advantages, or potential advantages. It takes away from gameplay

Tiffany is a disaster who doesn't even understand the game. She should have been voted out last week. This week, the green team made a savvy move to get rid of Brad, who had amassed a ton of potential power... but I'm not sure they even knew what all he had.

Had never watched Deadwood and then finally binged it the past few weeks and loved it. I can't imagine how fans of it were feeling when it got canceled, though the third season finale did also work decently as a series finale. But glad they were able to make the movie and bring some closure.

Not sure what annoyed my wife more: Me quoting one of Al's proclamations about booze, business, hookers and oral sex or reciting one of E.B.'s soliloquies.
