    I'll go a bit further.
If you are older than 25, and you're not wearing the hat as some kind of necessary work attire or safety feature, don't wear a hat.
I was once staunchly pro-hat. I am now diametrically opposed to that position.

I believe it is the only 180 degree reversal in my personal cosmology.

What about to cover a bald spot or to protect your thinning dome against sunburn? I for one cannot be outside in the sun for any length of time without a hat. And if I go play 18 in the sun, I’m gonna have serious hat head if I go out to eat afterwards. Honestly, I don’t get this at all. This a vestige of a bygone era.

If you’re at the grille after a round of golf, at the club, a golf hat is appropriate. Going out to dinner afterwards with your date and or others, you should not be wearing the hat, unless it’s a fast food establishment

What about, say, Outback? Not fast food, not high end.

It’s sit down, with a waitress. It’s not high end but you can’t get out of there without spending $100 for family of 4. Take the hat off.

Take your hat off at the table at any restaurant you are at.

Still, I don’t get this. Do you think it’s disrespectful to wear a hat indoors at a sit-down restaurant? Dirty? Low class?

Interesting. I can certainly understand a place where the average plate is like $20 or more and where most men are wearing slacks and a collared shirt. But a place where kids are welcome and it’s noisy and there are televisions hanging on the wall? I don’t see the problem. Believe me, I’m more inclined to lean toward the respectful gesture, and I lived in the south for many years, where this would probably be more expected. But always losing a hat at a sit down place seems extreme.

Fair enough and I don’t totally disagree with you. That said, it’s a very conservative attitude and doesn’t make a lick of sense.
