If I'm driving a longer distance that has me on city streets for more than four or five turns, which is often when I'm navigating by phone, I'm sorry but I'm looking at it if for nothing else than to get a heads up which lane I need to be in.

Are you holding it in your hand like the magic traffic 8-ball, straddling lane lines?

I try not to. I guess I was responding more to your second point and less your first. I do try my best to keep my douche driving to a minimum.

Google Maps announces distances and turns. Pretty easy to follow without staring at your phone.

It does but it's inconsistent about what the next turn is after that. So if I'm pulling off the freeway and have three turn lanes to make the turn with, it tells me to use the left/right three lanes, but I don't know if I should use the far left or the far right off the three until after I'm making the turn. Or even if it's one turn lane but I'm turning on to a two or three lane road. If that turn is a block or two away and/or there is a lot of traffic, it is helpful to know what the next move is before I make the first one. More often than not, my wife is with me so she reads off which lane I need to be in so it's a moot point. It becomes an issue when I'm navigating neighborhoods to get to a school I visit once or twice a year, if that and something as simple as knowing I should be in the left instead of the right saves me from otherwise missing a turn or being aggressive to the point of being dangerous.

Can't you figure all that out before you leave?

Well yes but as I said earlier there are times when where I'm going is more complicated of a route than I can commit to memory.

Waze, in my experience, is way more accurate than Google Maps. Either way, put your phone on speaker and it tells you where to go. Review the directions before you start driving so you have a general idea. Otherwise, please stop your damn car and figure it out.

In and around D.C., no one ever knows where the fuck they're going, especially during the summer months.

As annoying as that is, it's way better than all of those people driving with eyes glued to a phone.

I think it's alright to look at your phone while driving as long as you only do it when you're driving in a neighborhood.
    Near a school.
