Am going over final candidates now; some were no brainers; others were hurt by previous misses or seeming ambivalence...

This was a hard choice. Harder than 2007, when very few were cut and harder than 2008, when the poll was bumped up to 52 spots and there was still a cut list.
It came down to different things for different people. The committee (myself, Jack and Dottie, the hardest working canines in this poll) looked at why voters wanted a spot -- weighing indifference and overeagerness; we looked at consistency of voting in terms of odd teams and missed weeks over the last year and sometimes two. And we looked at whether or not we needed a change.
But there are 37 choices -- 38 because I keep forgetting to count me -- for the 2009 sportsjournalists.com College Football Poll.
Two alternates will be chosen from the 38 -- and only myself and one other member will know who -- so everyone feels their vote counts, much like the man in the firing squad who gets to shoot blanks.
It's not an indictment of anyone -- hell, there was one pick that even surprised the hell out of me.

The rules are simple: Each week during the season by NOON MONDAY CENTRAL TIME voters must PM to me their top 25 Football Bowl Subdivision teams (that's Division I to most people on the planet). Voters get one miss, the second and they are out; you must vote in the preseason poll to be eligible. I have the right to challenge and dismiss any ballot for inaccuracies and regional favoritism -- especially in the preseason poll where teams picked to finish sixth in their division of a mid-major have been picked in the top 25. Or simply if I think the voter isn't paying attention (which happens more often than not when a team loses and a voter bumps them up a spot or two.)
I ask that you go into this with an open mind, vote as soon as possible, pay attention and give this an honest effort.
In return, I promise that ... ahh hell. I'm not promising anything other than to try and entertain or provoke thought in the poll story. On a rare occasion, I promise both.
The preseason poll is due one week from today -- Aug. 11 -- by 11:59 p.m. CT. with a release date of whenever I get around to filling it out and doing a story, in between football tab stories (am shooting for the 18th).
The weekly poll will begin following the Labor Day weekend -- although ballots for that weekend will be Tuesday, Sept 8 at 9 a.m. CT (honestly, if you haven't figured out the top 25 by the end of Miami-Florida State, you shouldn't be here.)
If there are any questions, please let me know.
Thanks to all who allowed me to consider them for the poll. It was tough, I promise you.

Yeah, um...it's funny as hell that you took me seriously, but no, I want no part of this poll.

Good thing I worked on my preseason rankings last night, in part because I talked with a friend about a top 50 he's putting together when we began our inevitable college football conversation at dinner the other night. Got a tentative 50 teams in line, just a matter of tinkering now.

The spot is there if you want it, since you did send me a query.

Nah. I'm good. Thanks, though. Chances are, I'd be a forgetful Freddy, and I don't want to waste your time nor mine.

I'll just admire it from afar.

At least you're not in the "also receiving votes" category.
