Working alone lends itself to that. Now conversation, and often yuckfests between partners, fill the airtime.

Relationships with local sponsors also plays a big part in the longevity of a local announcer. Of course, if big time local announcer schtups major local sponsors wife - then you got problems.

Grew up listening to a lot of Reds on the radio with Marty and Joe. I loved 'em for sure. Nothing like listening to a west coast game on the radio in bed.

Watched a lot of Harry Caray and Steve Stone, too. Harry like a mascot, but really enjoyed Stone.

Now, I do greatly appreciate how good Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez are on Mets games.

Same. L.A. sports fans were lucky to have the 3 best in class.

Joe Starkey with the Golden Seals and Bears. Don Klein with Stanford and the Niners. The Bay Area didn't lack for radio sports talent, which is probably why I wound up leaving. :)

During lockdown I was watching an old game on NFL Network - pretty sure it was the Dolphins-Chargers epic - and they were using the radio broadcast with another LA legend, Tom Kelly, on play by play. I also remember back in the early 80s, one of the Toronto stations picked up the weekly fights live from Olympic Auditorium and I seem to remember Kelly working ringside some nights with Allan Mallamud.

And didn't have a boatload of, uh, great stories to tell.

More like overnight. I don't remember how exactly they showed things from that Olympics, but a noon race in South Korea would be held at 1 a.m. in the Eastern US.

I don't mind Rojas, but add in Gubicza as a horrendous, bland tv color guy.

And Roger freaking Lodge is the only local voice on the Angels-owned radio station.
Talk about minor league for an LA wannabe.
