If it's a story about a celebrity with a serious health crisis, you can take it to the bank that it's been sourced (usually with medical records) because a celeb can prove a false story impacts their ability to find work (have you noticed there aren't as many of these kinds of stories any more? That's because medical records are covered by federal laws now).

And finally, if it's a story about anyone cheating on a married spouse, you can be absolutely sure the NE has vetted that one completely, too...because accusing someone of cheating comes with a pretty low libel bar to cross. If the NE is wrong, it's quite easy to sue them and win. And I think the last time that happened was during the Reagan administration.

In 2007 J-Lo won a half-million settlement against the mag over a drug use claim.
Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson also won lawsuits the same year.
The mag has also issued a shit laod of aoplogies and out-of-court settlements to Britany Spears, Brooke Shields and one of the Olsen twins.

THanks for proving my point -- that the drug and cheating stories have to be closely vetted or they get whacked. Let's do some math:

52 issues a year X 25 stories a week = 1,300 stories per year, 9,100 since 2003.

Pretty good batting average, IMO.

Some dude on Today, can't remember the name, said they were in "serious" negotiations to re-do the pre-nup. She gets like $5 million NOW if she agrees to stay, $55 million paid out over X years if she stays seven and the pre-nup is done after seven years of marriage sted 10. Like it was a business, not a marriage.
As it stands, I think he said, she gets $20 mil.
