Absolutely. His role on the team? “He’s the OG.”

Hasn’t played a minute this season. Every game, DNP-Coach’s Decision.

Only played in four games last season.

    Making $1.6 million this season.

The living embodiment of the American dream.

Driving back from upstate NY a few years ago, saw a guy in the distance, weaving erratically. Followed him for a while, then passed him on the left. Looked over and saw to my horror that he had his eyes closed and his head back, like he was sleeping. I didn't honk since he was pretty much in his lane and was afraid of startling him. My passenger to this day thinks the guy was pranking us.

How will they know if he was on the phone? Are they checking phone records? I didn't think the black box would account for that.

I'm just increasingly skeptical that the cops will to go too deep into this. I understand that they have bigger fish to fry than a single-car accident that only hurt the driver. But this is another serious incident from a high-profile figure who might not be so lucky in his next crash. And it's not unreasonable to think there could be another.

Never heard of him. And with a name like that, I'm sure I'd remember him.

Briny was the son or nephew of a journey touring pro.

The things I remember about him are never winning, a bad straw hat, and a weird putting stance that basically had one foot behind the other.

It’s hard to imagine he doesn’t at least get some sort of moving violation ticket from this - careless driving, without due care and attention, whatever the statute provides. It’s not like he hit black ice.

They are treating it as a standard investigation after an accident, not as a potential felony. They'll subpoena his phone records (if they don't get them voluntarily), then check the times he was on the phone. If he was on the phone when the black box says the accident happened, then they have him for distracted driving. That would be of interest to whatever insurance companies are involved, like the one insuring the tournament SUV he was driving and possibly his medical insurer. Given that he crossed the median and down the hill without leaving any brake skid marks, it pretty well looks like he was on the phone or asleep at the wheel. Brake application will be in the black box as well. They can time line it and reconstruct fairly accurately. If the black box shows a high speed he might get a reckless driving out of it.

This isn't a "get Tiger" sort of thing, it's pretty standard in the cell phone era, especially for an accident that looks like this.

I remember him from his playing days -- but only because of his name.

Son of Butch Baird, who had two wins in 20 years on Tour.

    From Briny's PGA Tour profile:

Has an unusual putting style he adopted from his teacher in 1999. Keeps most of his weight on his left foot, which is placed decidedly forward, to encourage remaining still over putts.

2014 (his last season): Finished T2 at the McGladrey Classic, worth $484,000. Entered the final round tied with Chris Kirk at 10-under, and then entered the final hole tied with Kirk for the lead at 14-under before a bogey (which included a made putt from 25 feet, 4 inches) led to the sixth runner-up finish of his career.

2011: Chipped in for an eagle-2 on the 71st hole of the Frys.com Open to work his way into a sudden-death playoff with Bryce Molder, a first for both players. With each player in search of his maiden TOUR win, Molder sealed the deal with a birdie-3 on the sixth extra hole at CordeValle GC.

2009: Was one of four players to win a BMW Z4 convertible by making a hole-in-one at the 15th hole at the RBC Canadian Open (Arjun Atwal, Leif Olson and Casey Wittenberg). It was his fifth TOUR ace and second in 2009, the other coming at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

2004: Made a hole-in-one on the third hole during the first round of the Buick Open with a 4-iron from 197 yards. His father, Butch, made the first hole-in-one at the Buick Open in 1962 on the same hole. [THIS IS MY FAVORITE NOTE]

This is a good explanation. My instinct was they are trying to make an example out of a celebrity, but the accident does financially affect others, despite no injured.

Always crazy to see some of those names - it’s wild how golfers just slide off the face off the earth, seems different than other sports. Molder and Wittenberg were promising young star ams.
