They are talking about African American writers.

It's funny as to what counts as a minority, 21. I don't count in Canada, even though I'm Jewish.

We're not a minority. Everyone knows we rule the world. 8)

I took the 'minority' reference in this case to include women, given the subject was Karen Crouse.

If SI is courting her, she will be there in a heartbeat.

Gets me to thinking: Who are the best female writers to have worked at SI?

  6. Johnette Howard, Sally Jenkins.

NBA beat was never covered better than when Jackie McMullen covered it for SI.

Throw in Christine Brennan (I know, I know she never worked there) and I'd say you 've got the making so a good starting front court. Those three can do anything. And they don't take any shit.

In that vein why not add Toni Morrison too. She never wrote for SI either but she's a pretty good writer .

Emily Bronte would have to be there as well.

You could also throw in Judith Krantz but I've never been in a locker room with either of those two. I have with the other three. I know what they can do under pressure. They can churn out excellent sports stories.
I don't think Morrison and Krantz can do that but that's not to say they wouldn't give it a good try.

  12. How about Shirley Povich? He wasn't a woman, and didn't write for SI, either, but he was also a good writer. Johnette, Sally, Christine, Toni and Shirley -- a Fab Fem Five.
