No list like this would be complete with the names of Ann Frank and Jenn Sterger.

Frank would bring great mental toughness and Jenn would bring great energy and fresh ideas.

I don't know about that. She writes too much like Karen. You need some different styles.

  3. Not in sports coverage, it doesn't. The Times' coverage of its major sports teams differs dramatically from that of most other papers in the country. Your major sports beats, whether they're pro or college (depending on the market) almost always merit multiple bylines per day -- features, notebooks, lists, charts, etc. Even major sports sections like Boston and Dallas and Atlanta do things like this. The Times takes a much more scaled-down approach, partly due to to space, and partly due to the fact that it's very much an international publication. They have fantastic writers who do great work. But when it comes to beat coverage, almost everyone else in the country does it differently.

SI has 26 Senior Writers. Anyone know offhand how many of those are women?

No peeking at the magazine, just a random guess.

    Thank you for playing.

The answer is one. One. Kelli Anderson. That's it.

    Impressive.

    What's that about?

I don't think she even made it to senior in college.

Crouse is very good, but I'm a little surprised SI has never (to my knowledge) made a run at Juliet Macur. Selena would be another woman who I would expect to be high on their list.

There are plenty of outstanding female writers out there and while I hate affirmative action, having one woman among 26 senior writers is horrible...

  12. Macur is about 1,000 times better than Crouse. Roberts is 1,000,000 times better than either.
