Today in cops gone feral

Ugh. Just bad times all around. "Stalling for Time" should be required reading for officers.

 

I can't read the article. Can someone explain what happened? It seems absurd.

 

Guy having a mental health incident, in possession of two knives, crashes his car. He refuses to get out. He crashed in a ditch, in a place that isn't a danger to the public, so it's not clear there has been a crime committed. After an hour, police get impatient, and attempt to forcibly remove him from car by breaking window. At this point, he staggers out of car holding the knife. He's hit by bean bags and a taser, but because he's still holding a knife an officer shoots him. Non-paywell story here:

It's unclear why he just didn't drop the knife or throw it out of the car... but it still seems like a gross escalation to shoot him. (Maybe he was concussed? He was in a car accident.) Family has released some of the body camera footage.

 

I never understand why officers don't just back up when someone is holding a knife. Mental health cases are truly about as dangerous for officers as domestic disputes. We had a cop out this way shot in the head by a teen who was in crisis and his mom called for help. You also never know if the whole thing was a set-up for suicide by cop.

What the actual fuck!?!

 

It's as if the cops are trying to put police departments out of business.

 

Nope. Local government must always BACK THE BLUE. They’ll cannibalize another department’s budget.

 

I’m not saying cops are morons but most morons suck at conflict resolution, which is one of the primary jobs of cops.

 

Most people suck at conflict resolution.
