He's not downplaying the Holocaust. He's joking (again, not so effectively), "Yep, that's me the coach so horrible I deserve to be compared to the Holocaust."

Ok, apparently I was unclear or you are misreading what I wrote.

Let's try this again. I am bothered by thoughtless comments like this not because I think the speaker is trying to downplay the Holocaust, but I think these kinds of statements do make it easier on the people who really are trying to deny or diminish the horror of what happened.

Clearer?

Yiou can't be a public figure and link yourself with Hitler, in any way, and not expect a shitstorm to follow.

Coughlin is the coach most ill-suited to the New York market since Rich Kotite.

Yeah, OK, he said Hitler was the most hated (which is arguably true), followed by him, hence the punchline.

But just because you utter the H-bomb in itself is not grounds for firing.

Now if he said Hitler was his leader, and all Jews were crafty (like lefthanders), and his secret desire was to start a bratwurst farm, then fair enough.
