Given my robust thoughts on Peyton Manning and how #18 does in the playoffs, Tony Dungy should win a medal for winning a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning.

Oh, wait, they beat Rex Grossman in the rain.

    Carry on.

The Rams drafting Michael Sam wasn't about Jeff Fisher being a social pioneer or the NFL leaning on the Rams to take Sam.

"Okay," Fisher said right before the pick in the war room. "Take Michael Sam."

    "Really, Coach?"

"Yup. Every time I have to talk about Michael Sam after practice, it means I don't have to talk about Sam Bradford after practice. We'll cut Michael Sam at the end of preseason."

Reporters do "root" for a good story. You want to write something you haven't written or written about before. Phil winning the US Open, Danica winning a NASCAR race, Tiger making a serious run at Jack, Peyton Manning or Elway winning one last Super Bowl, LeBron going home to Cleveland and leading the Cavs to a title...
What's interesting is that the hellish childhood Sam went through to get to this point isn't a new story to most NFL writers. Being openly gay is.

A crusade to get equal treatment for human beings. What a terrible thing.

Point being let the buffoon be a buffoon? Sorry, I do have a habit of pointing out bullshit when I see it.

Tony Dungy, you're not helping yourself.

    http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2014/07/23/tony-dungy-michael-sam-dan-patrick-gay-marriage/13037957/

Asked if he'd like to meet Sam, Dungy said he hadn't thought about that, but that he'd like to.

"I'd love to do that. Hopefully I get the chance. I'd love to wish him the best. I have no bitterness or animosity toward him, even though I don't agree with his lifestyle. I love him."

In closing, Patrick asked Dungy what criticism he's heard over the past two days has hurt him the most and the former Colts coach responded with how his faith is being perceived.

"That being a Christian that I'm somehow hateful to gay people, because I feel a way about marriage that I'm anti-gay, that's certainly not what I'm all about."

Um, coach, didn't you just say "I don't agree with his lifestyle"?

Dungy reiterated that the interview with the TB Tribune took place right after the draft, when the Opera news was still fresh, in an interview on the Dan Patrick Show today.

If he is telling the truth, I think the reporter is using those quotes out of context.

Didn't the reporter say it was from a couple weeks ago? I can't find a quote where he says that.

    Boy, that's disappointing.

I wanted to cut Dungy some slack on the initial quotes because of the timing questions and the fact that all coaches prefer to operate with the curtains drawn on the outside world.

But when he emphasizes disagreeing with the "lifestyle" -- which isn't really a "lifestyle" but just the guy being who he is -- I think his initial quotes were in context, were reflective of his true feelings and were about Teh Gay and not merely The Distraction.

The reporter said "a week or two back." Dungy himself originally said "several weeks ago," which, again, could technically refer to early May, but I doubt it.

This is not going to end well at all.

Regarding where the reporter said it, it was on the Dan Patrick show and the clip is linked earlier in the thread. Here it is for those who missed it.
