I used to love watching the the Baseball Bunch. I remember Ted Williams' strike zone of colored balls that I thought was so cool. And of course, the Chicken cracked me up (hey, I was 8 years old!)

And in addition to my earlier list, here's some more:

    11. Actually feeling hatred for pro wrestling's villians.
    12. The Veer offense
    13. Closers who come in the game in the 7th inning
    14. Watching Selection Sunday and not having a clue who any of the Cinderella teams are (Coppin State? Austin Peay? Siena?)
    15. Roller Derby on ESPN
    16. The 3 for 2 free throw opportunity in the NBA
    17. Phil Rizzuto plugging 'This Bud's for you' every time a Yankee hit a home run
    18. Bob Murphy broadcasting a Mets game on the radio
    19. The NFL Draft televised during a weekday.
    20. Both winter and summer Olympics being on every four years, rather than alternating every two.

    11) Alternative-uniform designs not conceived with gang-color combinations in mind.
    12) An NFL with each team blessed with a minimum of one QB who didn't suck.
    13) Professional basketball and hockey offering pre-holiday games worth watching.
    14) Consistently-large crowds at upper-level racetracks.
    15) MLB managements in Pittsburgh and Kansas City who gave a rat's ass about offering competitive products.

Is that the same one that's been a display at the Hall of Fame for the last 20-plus years?

I remember when it was a free-standing exhibit -- kind of in a wooden frame on wheels -- the first time I went to the Hall in 1988. Now, they've got it encased in a wall with a bunch of other Ted items. Looks cooler on its own, IMO (or maybe that's just my then-6-year-old brain being more wowed by it at the time.)

    OK, my serious ones:

    1. The St. Louis Arena/Checkerdome/St. Louis Arena. Oh, to be leaked on from the Astrodome-esque roof again.
    2. The Astrodome.
    3. The old-school Roller Derby, long before ESPN, the one with Joanie Weston, Bald Eagle Bob Hein, Peanut Myer and Ann Carvello.
    4. ESPN's old school oval logo.
    5. Old-school NASCAR, when a country singer (Marty Robbins) could compete.
    6. Dave Marcis, who could never compete, but would somehow be out there about every week.
    7. The footie officials in fedoras.
    8. The old-school MISL, with flames serving as the goal-judge lights for the Phoenix Inferno, with players having triphongs, and where you could have great seats for five bucks.
    9. Sports Challenge with Dick Enberg, and actual teams of professional athletes competing.
    10. Outfield walls and hockey rink boards without advertising signage.

More after my fingers rest up.

    1. You Make The Call during commercial breaks in NBA games on TBS
    2. Oldsmobile in NASCAR
    3. Baseball cards that you could actually tear (they're all made of non-rippable plastic these days)
    4. SportsChannel
    5. Classic Sports Network (before ESPN bought it and cannibalized it)
    6. The Metro, Great Midwest and Southwest Conferences
    7. The World League of American Football (the two years before it became NFL Europe)
    8. The UPI poll
    9. Charging in the NBA (i.e., before that damn semi-circle was put underneath the basket)
    10. RollerGames

Sorry, had to be done. ;)

We would have accepted "no loud music on the advertising-obsessed Jumbotron" or "no scrolling digital advertisements behind home plate". But not "no advertising on the outfield walls," because except for certain parks -- Wrigley Field, for one -- those have always been there.

Tell you what, signage wasn't around in the '60s through '80s, much in the same way that television shows being named for a sponsor were phased out and then came back, largely due to ESPN. So as far as my good ole days, as opposed to spnited's, my item stands.

Loved watching the LA T-Birds, with Frankie Valladeras, Ronnie "Psycho" Raines, "Skinny Minny" Gwen Miller, and the lovely Darlene Langois de la Chapelle.

  12. Red On Roundball.
