Torre turns down the Yankees

Market inequity? LMAO. Tell that to Florida of 2003 or Oakland's team last year. If that was the case, there wouldn't be seven different World Series champs in the last seven years. There's more parity in MLB than there is in the NFL based on playoff qualifiers and winners. Market inequity. haha

To cite market inequity as the only reason for the Yankees' success under Torre is unfair and inaccurate. But to say the Yankees' massive payroll doesn't give them an advantage on everybody else is delusional.

My point is, to make the playoffs 12 consecutive years given the parity and the complexity of the game is highly impressive, huge salary or not. That the team made it this year is amazing considering they were 14 1/2 games down, as someone else pointed out.

I just loved it when he was asked to talk about Randy Levine and said he didn't deal much with the guy. Then, later, when Levine's name was brought up again, Joe said I'd rather not talk about that.

It was a typically marvelous hour from a man who truly gets it. And I'll tell you right now -- without a doubt -- who will miss Torre the most. The answer is ... us in the media. There is nobody as good as he is at answering questions and making the questioner feel comfortable. I've covered baseball in the NY area for over 35 years and no one compares to Joe Torre in the area as availability, honesty, class, you name it. I wish him well, whatever he does next.

And I repeat, I first met Joe in 1978 and have remained close over the years, and I'm thankful he helped make the job enjoyable, at least sometimes.

Fair enough. I'm too used to those among the Yankee faithful who try to insist that having a huge financial advantage isn't at least a factor in the team's success.

Well said Casty. I found it interesting that there was a lot of clapping in the room when presser ended.

How would you feel if Bobby V was named the next manager?

Bobby V can manage. Nobody knows the rule book better and his game managing is excellent. Bobby's one problem that I've seen over the years is getting along with people -- players at times, media members at times, his coaches at times. I honestly don't see him as a fit with this particular Yankees group. Then again, maybe it would work to have someone very different from Torre in the manager's office.

One problem is how the Yankees bosses have intimated that Mattingly is the manager in waiting. That leads me to believe if they bring someone else in as manager, they lose Mattingly forever and he's something of a beloved figure in Yankees annals.

    Casty,

Do you think Mattingly is ready to manage?

As a Yankee fan since the early 80s, I can remember the ugly 1990 season and the 14 years between playoff appearances.
The Tampa brass still doesn't get it, money does not mean titles. Excellent pitching + quality role players = postseason success.
I'll take Scott Brosius over A-Rod in the WS any day of the week.
Is it any coincidence when the Yankees got away from the Gene Michael type teams in the early 2000s and back to the buy-a-title teams that the Yankees stopped winning rings?
I know Joe was going to leave someday but this is a guy who knows how to manage.
    And fuck Al Neuharth.

Al's your garden-variety entitled Yankee fan who thinks a chimpanzee could manage this roster.

I have issues with a number of Mr. Torre's managerial philosophies, but as a coddler of egos, the man's unparalleled.

Al doesn't seem to get that.

It may be that they are trying to sell the team and aren't all that interested in running the team. Maybe they just want to cash out.

Full disclosure: I despise the Yankees. I grudgingly respect what Torre's done.
