Torre turns down the Yankees

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Oz, Oct 18, 2007.

  1. ESPN news has been talking about this non-stop for the last few hours. Pretty good college football game tonight and Game 5 of the ALCS coming up.

No matter how crappy the team was becoming around him with aging pitchers and overrated position players, Joe Torre deserved to leave on HIS terms. Period.

Some poor fool is going to take that Yankees job because of the glamor of New York and the reputation the Yankees have for winning World Series. However, this time the cursed AL East team isn't the Red Sox.

Here's hoping they end up with Sam Perlozzo because 99 percent of the people who might otherwise jump at the chance to manage in pinstripes see the Yankees for the classless organization they've become.

"Under this offer, he would continue to be the highest-paid manager in major-league baseball," team president Randy Levine said. "We thought that we need to go to a performance-based model, having nothing to do with Joe Torre's character, integrity or ability. We just think it's important to motivate people."

What a fucking douchebag, trying to justify a lowball offer that was obviously designed to fire Torre without firing him. This was a classless move from a usually classy organization. I hope the NY media fucking shreds them for this, because they deserve it. If you want to fire the guy, fire him, but don't make pathetic statements like this to try to make your shit not smell as bad.

My guess is they'd throw both in the promo, then when the camera light turns red, they'll give a brief mention of the Yankees' news before saying something like, "But there was a game tonight. ..."

This is a win win for all concerned. It was not in Joe's best interest to go out shooting.

Neither party looks bad they way this works out.

Joe realized it was time to go. Don't forget he is a friend of Pat Riley and probably read Riles book.

Huh? I may be the only one (and I don't have a dog in the fight), but how is an offer that still leaves him the highest paid manager in baseball and includes huge bonuses for playoff series won a slap in the face?

The argument is that it was a 35-percent cut in his base salary.

I think, though, that you have to look at it from the perspective of "Yankee money." From a feeding-his-family perspective, $5M is great. But the Yankees routinely overspend on everything, right? So if they pay 25 percent more for a free agent than anyone else would, just because they can, doesn't Torre have the right to command 25 percent more than he would anywhere else?

So I think in this case, $5M is closer to $3.5M or $3.75M in "rest-of-the-world" money. Still good, sure, but not quite AS good.

It sucks the way in which Joe was treated. I was way to young to remember the '81 series, so for me growing up, the first time the yanks had any real sustained success was when Joe took over. Based on his past accomplishments he deserves to spend as long as he wants as the manager. However for everyone to assume that the yanks will lose all these free agents is stupid. Mo, A-Rod, Possada,.... they will go wherever the most money is. There is no loyalty in professional sports. It may cost them more now to get Mo and the others to sign, but trust me if the Yanks want them they will spend to get them.
