Torre turns down the Yankees

Not for the Red Sox....I was hoping they'd resign Torre....and then lock up all the old veterans and watch the Yankees be forced to stick with a lineup 4-5 years past their prime, and in turn delay the development of their young guys.

Dammit! I wish I could've sent her some kleenex.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks all this is worth it because we're now referring to George as the "Big Adult Diaper?"

Well, it's not like he's led them to a playoff series win in three years. With the highest payroll in the game. Look, he's a great manager, don't get me wrong. But should the Yankees really be forced to fork over $8 mil for the results they've been getting?

You mean to tell me (insert name here) can't do what he did the last three years?

It wasn't just the money. It was the length of the contract. The option is meaningless. The point of wanting a two-year deal is it makes it harder for the Yankees to fire him if they get off to a slow start again.

And really, you want to blame Torre for this team losing in the first round of the playoffs? Because that is exactly what you are doing by saying he deserves a pay cut. He didn't build that pitching staff. Cashman did. Blame the GM for wasting big money on Carl Pavano, Kei Igawa and later on Roger Clemens while claiming that solid pitchers like Ted Lilly and Gil Meche were overpriced.

The local radio idiots keep talking about how the Yankees had a superior team to the Indians this year. By what possible measure? The Indians had a better record in the regular season, too. The Indians had better starting pitching as well. The Yankees' pitching is what failed them in the playoffs. Their "ace," Wang, pitched like shit twice.

The Yankees had the most expensive roster in baseball this season. That doesn't mean it was the best.

I'm with you on the years. Understand how a one-year deal is bullshit. Not sure you can really fault them for wanting to bring his salary down a little ... with huge bonuses.

If they had offered him two years, $10 million guaranteed with the same bonus structure for both years they were offering for just 2008, I wouldn't be criticizing the move at all.

It's not like Torre needs the money.

This was a kick in the face by The Three Stooges; (George, Hank, Hal)

This was Torre's way of saying, "You know what, I don't need this shit."

Yeah like they won't return because Torre is not there. Please. If they Yankees offer one dollar more than anyone else they will be back in a flash.

Make the playoffs 12 straight years? No I don;t think there are many that could have done that. He was a perfect fit for the job and I am guessing that pretty soon people are going to start to realize that.

    Boom, you're absolutely wrong.

Do you want to know when Torre knew his time with the Yankees was up? The morning of October 7, when George Steinbrenner's petty bitching about his manager made Ian O'Connor's column.

Why would he stay? For the "glory" of being the Yankees manager? For the opportunity to be second guessed by a bunch of back-stabbing incompetents in Tamps who can't spell bunt?

Torre leaves the Yankees with his dignity intact. The Yankees only wish they could say the same.

Had lunch with a Captain of Industry today, a guy who has managed xbillion dollar operations. We caught the Torre announcement on the way out of the restaurant, and this guy, a Boston fan, yips: "One year? One *&%#ing year? Are they out of their minds?"

Then he picked up on the comp arrangement and left the restaurant shaking his head. To him, it was like Chrysler letting go of Lee Iacocca. No one better is in the wings, so it doesn't make sense.
