I must have sent out hundreds of resumes and I've gone to several networking events and career fairs in the six months-plus I've been unemployed. I feel as though I've been on at least 15-20 interviews, but had never gotten a job offer.

Until Friday. I don't remember where I found out about the job, but I got the first call from them the previous Friday. The manager gave me a pre-screening, then sent me information I had to study over the weekend. Then she called me Monday.

I must have done well enough on the information and the roleplayed scenarios because she very quickly asked me to come in for an in-person interview. I did that the next day.

The good news is, they said they'd let me know by Friday. They did. The better news is the fact I got the job.

I've lost count of all the jobs I applied for, all the career fairs I attended, all the job contacts I made, all the interviews I went to. Finally, it's paid off.

Now I hope everyone else here who's been searching can get the jobs they seek or better. Being unemployed is not a fun experience, especially when you aren't getting benefits.

At least with a bakery, you can count on some dough.

Who is hiring, especially at that rate?

I'm telling you all... networking is key. Get out in the field you're looking to joing and get to know people. I've met with a marketing director and media director in each of the past two weeks and gotten tons of feedback, suggestions and recommendations.

I had to turn down a newspaper job last week.

It would have involved moving, and we just can't do it right now.

(I have a job, but it's not in newspapers, and I would like to be doing something else.)

The kicker: It was exactly the same job I got in 1981, six months out of college with one job behind me. And the pay was almost the same. It was the same place.

Yes, networking is key. The last three jobs I've had -- two of which are very, very good -- have been because someone I used to work with called me and said, 'come work for us.' I have interviewed for one job in my career (15 years ago) and didn't get it. It's who you know, for sure.

OK, so let my networking begin.

I'm working on a volunteer marketing/event planning position for a local big-time festival. They want me on board. Now we're just working out the kinks (how I can get some time while still working F-T). I think there's some PR and other relevant stuff involved, too.

If anything, I get some experience in a field I'm seeking on entering.

Ya, it's been a f------ nightmare for me.

And I'm starting to notice the effects ....Mentally, emotionally, I'm not the same. I'm drained, drinking more and I'm not my normal optimistic upbeat self.

One callback on maybe 40 second jobs I've gone for. And that one was for the opposite hours of what I applied for. Instead of overnights, nothing but 2 to 11s, which doesn't work for a beat writer.

There were a bunch of census jobs that I just missed like two months ago. Kicking myself, in that those paid well and had flexible hours. Would take either of those things in just about any second job right now.
