I hear ya, mate. Just know you are not alone. At least you have your youth and a future ahead of you.

been looking for a second job for over a year now. no one i've talked to has anything that will work with my schedule, and that blows.

every place i've applied for needs evening workers, and that's something i can't do.

at the same time, i'm extremely blessed that my church pays me $200/month to be the youth minister's assistant.

A friend who recently was downsized/bought out/laid off/a victim of reorganization etc., etc., etc. -- went to take the fireman's exam for the city.

The guy administiring the exam at the place where he took it told him there were about 2500 people who took the exam in the past five weeks and there was one more week of exams (it was a six week window).

    There are four jobs available.....

I picked up a second job at a grocery store in November. During the busy time of year here, I was probably pulling 70-80 hours a week between both jobs. Wanted to stab myself in the eye just so I could get a day off, but at least the money was good.

I'm trying to build up a little financial cushion, because I've been laid off before and it was by the grace of God that I didn't end up living out of my car. I figure the second job is layoff insurance, since I could probably slide into something full-time there if it ever came to that. And with the way things are going, if you have a job (even a BS part-time job) you would be stupid to let it go.

    rascal,

I've worked in a lot of places but the stockers in the grocery store were the biggest pains in the ass to deal with of anyone anywhere.

    Assholes!

I am sure you're nice, though.

  6. I got laid off earlier this year from a major....what has made my task more daunting is that the agency that contracted me with them screwed me out of receiving unemployment benefits. I started off by trying to give newspapers another whirl, but my heart's not in running the risk of going elsewhere only to get laid off again. I've managed thus far with help from family and friends, but you can't dip into that well too many times before it gets dry.

I've had some scattered interviews (car sales, insurance, etc.) but nothing of yet. At this point, I've had to dole a huge chunk of my book collection to Half Price Books just to fill my car up to go job hunting and am looking at the prospects of having to hock my laptop in order to pay my cellphone bill this month. I've already resigned myself to giving in to moving with my sister and her family in their guestroom, and while I am grateful for that, there is a huge body shot to my soul and the disillusionment of having spent the last three decades pursuing a boyhood dream only to get it shattered.

So, yeah, this is a depressing thread to read, but it's also the reality a lot of us have had to face because bean counters who have no clue to what we do deemed us expendable. It doesn't help matters that I was in the process of a divorce just short of our 16th anniversary at the time I was laid off. I'm optimistic of brighter days, but there are moments (like now) where it doesn't feel like they're around the corner.

Good God, I'm sorry man. You've been through the fucking ringer.

Just hang in there. Sounds like you have good friends and family. Sucks you got screwed out of unemployment. I was laid-off in October, but at least UI helps a little in addition to all the freelancing/odd jobs I'm doing.

Just keep your head up. I know it ain't easy right now, and I feel depressed sometimes, too. But I always try to remember this: As important and necessary as it is, money is just paper. And a job's just a job. Not to sound like a fucking philosopher, but try to find happiness in the smaller things. Watch a baseball game now and then, crack open a beer, and don't worry about anything else for a few hours.

Trust me, this may sound like an apathetic attitude, but you just have to do this sometimes.

When things were going really, really bad for us financially last year, Mrs. Stain and I just kept reminding ourselves that our lives are not defined by a number on a bank computer.

Actually, maybe not. The last position may be filled. I know sports is good for the near future.

Wow, could your post be more ignorant. Do you how much those plumbers, mechanics and electricians make? What are they jealous of?

What do you think they're jealous of? The chance to "go to games" and "write about sports," of course. That's not ignorant at all. I've had lots of people say that, including members of my own family.

Just because they might make more money doesn't mean shit. Many of them still think they would like a chance to do your job, even if they don't understand what it entails and wouldn't like it if they had to do it every day (let alone be successful at it.)
