Here's the update from CaringBridge. If just the news made it dusty, good luck making it through this one.

"Buh!”

That was William’s way of saying “bye” before his accident, and that’s what he said plainly as I walked out the door to go to work on the day of his accident.

I feared that would be the last word I heard him speak. But despair gave way to long odds and long odds turned into hope and then hope delivered a miracle.

William came home Thursday. First he went to the doctor’s office and got the staples and stitches out of his head. There must have been at least 25, but I never counted.

He let out a broad smile when he reached our apartment, settled into his bed and got hooked up to his feeding tube without complaint. He took a nap, sat at the dinner table with us (even refusing a Crab Rangoon) and then settled down to bed. There was a lot of hugging, playing and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” in between, of course.

Ruel came home from school and they settled in to play some Star Wars. Willie mostly just threw things. Kim and Willie got in some snuggle time and he really enjoyed that.

Late in the evening before bed, I called my mother to let her know Willie was home. I put her on the speakerphone. As soon as he heard her say “hello,” a crooked little smile, flat on the right, maniacally upturned on the left came to him. Within seconds the smile has spread from ear to ear. Grandma said “hello” and “I love you,” and Willie just kept smiling and tried to tap the phone with his right hand.

We talked a little more and then it was time for Willie to get to bed, so grandma said, “Bye, bye, Willie. I love you! Bye, bye, Willie. I love you!”

“Buh! Buh!” Willie said. And he said it again, and again and again.
