I don't know trains well enough to know what the ideal length of a freight train is. But let's say it was half of that. You could have 10 crew members and unless they're riding in a boxcar there still probably isn't a way to see all of the cars.

Eyeballs on a long train are just as important as they were in Casey Jones' day. However, modern technology allows real-time assessment of danger factors like a stupid bearing going out on a wheel.

Only if the information is relayed to the crew in time. For the East Palestine wreck, it wasn't.

    Every car gets a camera.

Every camera feeds to a monitor in the cab, and to the central office.

    It's the 21st century. C'mon.

NTSB to open a Special Investigation into Norfolk Southern Railway’s safety practices and culture. Three worker deaths involving the railroad since December.

He was also a sonofabitch who wrecked his train in a 40-foot ditch.

You're going to mount 100-200 screens in a cab? And thousands in the central office for multiple trains?

How about a single monitor cycling through each camera every few seconds in the cab?

And a bank of monitors doing likewise at the central office?

When I started as a dispatcher in a major market newsroom in 1975, I monitored more than 100 radio channels simultaneously.

How do you think security guards monitor large buildings or installations with multiple security cameras?
