Running in straight line toward end zone, runner had X yards to go to reach end zone. Running at an angle toward runner, defender had X minus Y yards to go in order to cut off the defender.

The defender who "caught" the runner was 3 yards ahead of him --- and not carrying a football --- when he began his pursuit angle.

Given enough of an angle and enough distance before the end zone, Kirstie Alley could catch Usain Bolt.
