I didn't hear the interview, but from the description of it, this is exactly what I was thinking. It's sort of the equivalent to the NFL GM's first-round draft pick turning out to be an enormous bust, but they persistently feel like they have to keep playing the turd over some undrafted gem because they don't want to admit the mistake.

This weekend, the Bowles story already is pretty much over in the NASCAR circle.

It's now officially an old story, and everyone is on to the new stories du jour.

Unfortunately for Bowles, he's still fired.

    Headlines come and go.

Career suicide lasts a lot longer.

Zack and Jack, Fox Sports Radio's morning guys, were just talking about this. Somebody from Frontstretch was on with them. But I just caught the last five seconds of it.

Bowles was on NPR's Talk of the Nation during the last hour. He played the role of victim and basically said anybody who thinks it's wrong to cheer in the press box doesn't understand the media in 2011.

    I heard that.

But I wasn't really sure of it was him, or someone James O'Keefe paid to act like him.

And Neal Conan (the host) said that he was in the pressbox, such as it was, for the Miracle on Ice game and he didn't cheer.

My question is: If we don't understand the media in 2011, then when precisely did this become OK? I want a time and date.

Duh, the exact moment Bayne on the Daytona 500. 'Cause it was such a historical moment for the sport, don'tchaknow.

The cheering will look even worse as Bayne fades back into anonymity in NASCAR. Good kid, great story for a day, but sorry, the tide in the sport is not turning to the kids yet.

No, no, it was a historic, sport- ... nay ... nation-changing event that will vault NASCAR past the NFL in popularity with the kids. Just ask Bowles.
