If you preach fiscal responsibility, don't continue to push through bloated budgets. If you preach the perils of illegal immigration, don't push through visa programs that fail to address the problem. The GOPe had the power to do many of the things it said it wanted to do. Instead, they abandoned their stated principles time and again when push came to shove. Obama and the Dems -- to their credit -- stayed on message and reaped the benefits of loyalty and support. The GOPe muddled its message through repeated capitulation or inaction. They gave rise to a "guy who doesn't stand for anything" by ultimately not standing for anything themselves. So instead of crying about Trump's presence, look in the fucking mirror and figure out how to prevent that leadership void from forming next time.

We agree on the fact that there was and is a leadership void.

But, the GOP did not muddle its message through inaction. That WAS their message -- We'll STOP everything Obumbo wants to do.

And Trump's rise is a direct result of their embrace of ignorance and obstruction instead of conservative principles.

Except they didn't stop Obama's agenda and ultimately gave him much of what he wanted. You and people Elsewhere are guilty of your own share of revisionist history.

They were kicking and screaming the entire way. I'm not sure what more you'd have them do. Especially when they didn't have the votes. Or had to listen to what their constituents wanted.

How long has it been since Congress actually passed a budget? CRs don't count. And, the "bloated" spending is mostly mandatory. What were they supposed to do?

How many Republicans voted for any of Obumbo's major initiatives?

I understand the compulsion to cut spending and pass leaner budgets. But:

-- More than 70 percent of the budget is either mandatory (Social Security, Medicare) or Defense-related, which the GOP is -- for good reason, IMO -- reluctant to cut.
-- So, everyone else is fighting over less than a third of the pie. Not being able to find tangible savings among the table scraps is NOT capitulation. It is the result of overextension of government spending that happened over decades and would take decades to unravel, if the will to do so even existed (it doesn't).

Throw in the Bush "temporary" tax cuts and running the Iraq war on a credit card.

What specifically are the things Obama wanted which the Republican Congress gave him?

I'll spot you "didn't force a default" and "didn't defund Planned Parenthood."
