I think three things happened in that vote for her...

    1. Everyone asked to vote on the assurances that Iraq had WMDs was mislead (at best) or outright lied to.

    2. A lot of pols (Rs and Ds) were swept up in the moment, wanted to seem tough in the face of 9/11

    3. In a moment where Hillary Clinton needed political courage, she did not have enough.

I think No. 3 is the fairest critique of her, if you want to critique her. She did not lead us into Iraq. She did not purposefully distort or falsify evidence about yellow cake uranium or nerve gas. She just didn't have the guts to stand up, in her very safe New York seat, and go against the tide. Maybe that was because she hoped to run for president someday, and maybe it was because is essentially a chickenhawk centrist. That people who were CHEERLEADING for the Iraq war think, now, they should get to come back and criticize her is just fucking ridiculous. It's liberals who should be pissed that she didn't have a spine in that moment. The idea that this is a Republican talking point remains one of the most disingenuous arguments of all time.

What worries me about Clinton is I fear she will have similar political instincts as a president. She will take the safe route when what's needed is courage and accountability. I was somewhat pleased to hear her account of the Bin Laden raid. When others wanted to hold off for 48 hours because of the WHC dinner, she said bluntly "Fuck the White House Correspondents Dinner." A small thing, maybe. But it wasn't the cautious choice. And that fucker is dead as a result. And if we had waited and he'd escaped, or if the mission had gone bad, there would be no friendly bipartisanship. There would be people tripping over themselves to tell us how incompetent the military was under Obama, that he had ruined morale and ruined us all (total falsehoods but, whatever). That credit does not go the other way for people who put their careers on the line to do the right thing is pretty disappointing.

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..."

Are you sure you want to give yourself away like this? Maybe workshop this new character a bit before playing the old hits.

You'd have to be a moron to still be wondering. So probably no more than a couple dozen posters.

Aw, I forgot the "... and cue the Democratic quotes from 1998 response" post.

But hey, nothing changes in five years, right? Shit, in the five years between your quotes, there were three guys who held the single-season home run record. Not even counting sports, intelligence changes in five years, right? Good thing the U.S. didn't use 1939 intelligence when they stormed the beaches of Normandy. We'd be speaking German today.

I think these takes on Hillary and her Iraq vote are really misogynistic. Why do you assume she was so easily misled by a male in a position of power? Are you saying she can't think for herself because she's a woman? That's totally unfair, IMO.

Have you ever criticized the actions of anyone or anything you support, or are you in a constant state of cognitive dissonance?
