I don't think even you can believe that.

He had a batallion of people in his camp who were fully aware of the importance of the debate. They knew he couldn't afford to get flustered and combative. And he shooed them away to work on his best barbs.

Thinking he's magically going to "get it" between the first and second debates is delusional.

 

It's the candidates' duty to bring up their issues. The questions are just like serves in ping-pong to get the rallies started.

 

Or Trump's new team will try to fix what went wrong last night. But then Trump being Trump will wander off script with one of his patented "by the way ..." diversions.

Kind of like when he had a chance to pin his ears back and go after her on the emails, but instead had to brag about how much income he allegedly had, how much his buildings are allegedly worth and say we live in a third-world country because Qatar and Dubai have fancier airports. The line about old dogs and new tricks applies - especially when the old dog has an aversion to doing his homework and remembers being a loudmouth worked in the primaries.

 

It was simply meant to be factual.
