Matthews actually nailed it. It's hard to sum it up any better than that.
A lot of Republican leaders have let down at best, or betrayed at worst, the rank and file voters who put them there. They've talked a good game, even put up some token resistance here and there, but always back down at the last minute when they could stick the dagger into some bad policies with a simple political maneuver or two.
Democrat leaders have made it pretty clear they don't give a damn what the aging, blue collar white people care about. They'd rather chase the new, younger, and insanely reliable black and hispanic voting blocs.

So along comes Trump, and his primary message is that he cares about the aging, blue collar (mostly rural white) voters who are being left behind economically. He wants to bring back manufacturing jobs that have been the bread and butter of our country for the past 150 years. Whether or not he can actually do that is irrelevant. Not only that, but he's obviously an outsider who isn't afraid (or doesn't know any better not to) to ruffle feathers within the Republican party. Even if he loses, a vote for Trump is sending a message to Republicans that their biggest voting bloc is pissed off at them for not doing what they said they would do.
Basically, those aging blue collar (mostly rural white) voters are trying to hang on to what they have and get ahead in life. No different than anybody else. Trump was the candidate who figured that out early on and best tapped into it. Of course there are (and were) better qualified candidates. But they're not offering the same message that Trump is, which is one that speaks to the biggest concern of that particular demographic -- which isn't racism or xenophobia, it's economics. Will they have a decent job four years from now? That's what it boils down to.

It's not that hard to figure out, if you take a step back from the jokes and stereotypes and really analyze it. You don't even have to agree with the politics of it. But if you want to understand Trump's support, that's where you start.

And I'm sick of them forcing me to look down on them. Throwing tantrums doesn't mean you get your way. It means you don't.

Told they're "deplorables" for one. Told they don't matter and need to move out of the way economically, for another. Told that they've had it good and have enjoyed "privilege" for long enough, even if they've worked their ass off for what they have their entire life and never asked for a damn thing, for a third.

The argument that Trump's support is about economics and not racism and sexism doesn't hold up to examination. His supporters are only monolithic about a few issues, and they are almost all social like preserving mascot names.

Also they don't matter and they do need to move out of the way economically. We'd be glad to provide them a social safety net though.

Not specifically to Herself, but you might revisit some of the "elite" reaction to the Fisher case/decisions ...

There are tentacles that branch that way, I'll admit. That's unfortunate. But as was once famously said, "It's the economy, stupid." It all comes back to that.

Again, the poor white man has it so tough.

How is the messiah Trump actually going to accomplish bringing manufacturing jobs back to the rural white man?

Most of them have no clue what his economic platform is.

Working-class white men are fine people so long as they keep their mouths shut and do what we tell them.

I believe she said 50% were deplorable. That is a bit low in my estimation but that leaves 50% that would be covered by your Trump voters. I would say that..If you think Hillary had you in mind with her comment then you probably are deplorable. But I agree that many are tired of being spoken down to. But what should the Dems do?
