Another issue is that campaigns have access to better polling than we do. The public polls don't have any motivation to spend real money on them the way internals do.

We can't trust leaked internal polling data because campaigns are only going to leak it if it helps their story.

But you can see now the professional politicians with access to those are acting. Clinton is pushing the map, Trump is cancelling ad buys, Democratic congressional candidates are trying to tie their opponents to Trump, and Republicans are pushing a "don't let President Clinton have Congress too" campaign.

 

Putin grew up as a KGB apparatchik. That's his world view, and it's been reinforced by years as a dictator.

You can negotiate with him all you wish, just don't expect him to do anything except what pleases him, gives Russia/him advantages to exploit, or furthers his ends. He'll ignore anything else unless he is forced to honor it. That's just who he is.

 

He's been in power for 16 years. Exactly how many nations has the Russian military occupied and/or declared war on?

Do you really want to compare "American military engagements abroad" vs. "Russian military engagements abroad" since 2000? Who's "war-mongering" again? You do realize that America has the world-wide reputation as the nation who will not blink an eye before it sends in the military to "bring democracy" to you, right? You do realize that Putin's reputation in America is vastly different than it is in just about every other country, right? He's a badass, for sure. He had to be to undo eight years of Yeltsin. But he doesn't throw his dick around the world in the manner that we do. Russia just doesn't have that sphere of influence. And never will. If he gets his feathers ruffled from time to time, it's because we keep installing NATO bases near his border. Twenty-five years after we promised we wouldn't. Of course it pisses him off. Who's the aggressor in this situation? The nation installing the military base, or the nation that gets upset about it?

Do you really want to compare regime changes engineered by Putin vs. regime changes engineered by America across the globe?

Why do any two sports teams make a trade? Because each feels they can benefit from it. It is possible for A to work with B and come up with a solution that helps A and B.

Cuban missile crisis: Missiles were removed from Cuba (America benefits!). Missiles were removed from Turkey (Soviet Union benefits!).

Russian military engagements: Chechnya. South Ossetia. Crimea.

One of these groups of things is not like the other.

 

Georgia and Ukraine, for two, and now he's apparently moving his navy toward Syria, right? He's also making threats against the Baltics and who knows who else.

The U.S. fucked up supremely in Iraq, there is no question of that, but we continue to operate within NATO/UN parameters. There is no comparison. And his targeting of political enemies has no comparison here.

 

But he's a badass! It's not his fault if his feathers get ruffled!

Syria is an ally. Its leader is rotten, but he's likely better than what would replace him. That's Russia's view, anyway, and it's not altogether crazy. Everything he has done in Ukraine has been in reaction to the Western-supported overthrow of its democratically elected leader. Before Victoria Nuland started handing out cookies and we were tying our puppet strings on Poroshenko, Putin hadn't touched the country. Ukraine is OUR fault, and we own the mess that it has become.

Well, we ARE NATO, so we kind of set our own parameters and/or make 'em up as we go along. It's good to be the king!
