There's a certain irony in one of the ads on this page, when I clicked the link, is in opposition to California's Prop. 61 - en Espanol.

I'd just like to take a moment and remind everyone that the real hateful and intolerant people are the ones who laugh at and mock the quoted people above, who just have a different opinion.

That has been the pattern for years. The company finds out how much the current coverage will increase if carried over as is, knows employees won't be happy, and starts looking for ways to hold down the increase. Copays for office visits and ER visits go up. Deductibles go up. Total out of pocket goes up. Your policy drops coverages that you didn't even know you had, and you won't know it until you need it, so when your kid gets in a car wreck and has a head injury you find out that things like speech therapy and occupational therapy are not covered, or are only covered for three visits a year. They do the three card monte on you, because who really reads all the various coverage documents that closely when open enrollment comes around? You'd have to compare last year's document to this year's to see the differences, and who keeps last years insurance docs?

It's kind of like bags of sugar going from five to four pounds and staying the same price, only it is your health coverage.

Not only is it not a coincidence ... it might not even be true!

I mean, yeah, and kinda no.

It's our damn health. We don't go to a doctor to negotiate. We go to feel better. We trust them as authorities. One of reasons that socialized medicine is a good idea is precisely why socialized community protection is: When we call the cops, we want the service, not a challenge to subcontract with a defense unit the way we do with, say, the garbage company.

I see safety and health pretty much the same, to be honest. Are there excesses and abuses with police? Absolutely. Our cops are not competing against one another for safety business.

It's worth asking why we think it's useful for doctors to do so.
