"Shopping" has returned to primary care with the rise of urgent care centers and clinics. Almost every grocery store near me has a clinic, and there are six urgent-care center within two miles of my house. A few of these have all-inclusive prices that include x-rays and lab work.

So the ER is a place you can never leave? If their treatment is aspirin, I'm pretty sure you're not staying very long.

Thanks, T. Good advice. I'll also pick up an MRI and EKG.

And yes, the former structure of insurance drove up prices.

Seems like the ACA gives you more many options for health care, though.

When did $20 for two aspirin become "emergency medical care"?

I'm gonna need at least $20 in aspirin after reading the last few pages.

Well, that's where we were headed around 8:30 p.m. one night last year when the wife had abdominal pains. To a huge urgent care facility a few miles from our house. This was no tiny little clinic, mind you. Looked like a real hospital the few times I had passed by it before:

    It was closed.

7-Elevens can stay open all night. But not "urgent" care places.

Can I ask what TTR is without being accused of snark (which I was only volleying as a return, by the way)?

Are you really this simple-minded? The fucking point is if you are in the hospital you are charged outrageous prices for medications (aspirin being like, ummm, an example). Of course I can buy fucking cough medicine for 10 percent of the price on my way home. Christ.

Aspirin was an example. But if you are having a heart attack, for example, you might be given aspirin.

It's easy to see why the politics thread was prohibited for so long, but at the same time, it's the only thread here with any traction. Not sure what that says.
