Also #hottakealert, sending presidential elections to the legislative branch is also stupid.

He got the most votes. And it's not all that close.

The field being huge and fractured could prevent anything and everything, according to that logic.

You're essentially saying a brokered convention was inevitable this year.

Yes, the field being huge and fractured *could* prevent anything and everything. That's kind of the point.

There is zero "will of the people" or "disenfranchisement" argument to be made for a plurality candidate.

What about for the conspiring to manipulate the election for months in order to make a brokered convention a certainty?

Just like the Electoral College doesn’t ensure that the popular vote will pevail in the general election, there is nothing in all the screwed up and varying primary election rules that promises the guy with the most votes win.

Who's shown Kerry and Obama more disrespect, Iran or Cuba?

The good people of the GOP should realize they belong to a hopelessly corrupt political organization and either join another or form a new political party in order to field a candidate who best represents them. For example, true patriot Bill Kristol has begun discussion about running a true conservative like Rick Perry or Tom Coburn as a third party candidate.

Republican Leaders Map a Strategy to Derail Trump - The Boston Globe

Never mind that it was Kristol who helped ignite this silliness by discovering Sarah Palin.

There's probably a little room to question Kennedy's judgements re: Cuba, no?

Hello, 1962? That's kind of a long time ago. When a policy has worked for half a century, changing it seems only logical.

There are also a lot of proponents of bigger government who are quite happy to bully and intimidate people, threaten and initiate violence or endless lawsuits if they don't get their way, and use government's power to absolutely crush individuals and circumvent the will of the "American people."
As always, the best path is somewhere in between. We need a strong federal government to preserve order, whether that's building highways or blowing up terrorists. Those things cost money and we need to pay (and occasionally raise) taxes to pay for them. At the same time, we cannot and should not fund everything. Not everything that a politician -- whether it's some first-term congressman from Wyoming or the President of the United States -- suggests is a good idea.
Somewhere along the way we've lost the common sense to say, "Yeah, this program absolutely is not working on a large enough scale to continue," and adopted the idea that "if it helps ONE kid then it's worth a billion dollars a year."
    No, it's not.
At some point, Democrats/liberals have to learn how to say "no" to certain social programs and "yes" to cutting spending. Republicans/conservatives have to learn how to say "no" to certain defense programs and "yes" to tax increases.
Until that happens, we're just going to keep going round and round.

To reiterate the facts of the federal budget. Spending on the old, sick and disabled, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid mostly, is the biggest hunk. Defense spending comes second. Then there's interest on the national debt and then there's everything else. Everything. Batman, if you want to run for federal office on a platform saying you're going to cut spending on the old, sick and disabled AND raise taxes, I wish you Godspeed. We have the federal government we have because the VOTERS want low taxes and lots of services Pols aren't doing it on their own. They don't do anything on their own.
