I think a big part of the high negatives is that I don't think the US has ever had two people who have been national figures for 20+ years running against each other.

Sure. It was a liberal idea for an escaped slave to be carrying a gun around. Conservatives felt that slaves should know their place in society and passed laws preventing them from owning guns for fear of revolting against the existing order.

 

That's mainly due to the Dem propensity over the years to latch onto up-and-comer darkhorses about every other election. (McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Clinton, BHO).

If you run back down the GOP list since WWII, just about every single candidate has been nationally prominent for at least a decade, with the possible exceptions of Goldwater, GWB and Mitt, and those last two were dynastic scions.
