    As has been stated many times, Sanders and Trump are identical on many of the issues, close on others.

    If you could quantify positions and put everybody on a left-right spectrum, I wonder if the two closest candidates would be HRC and Kasich.

    The difference is Sanders is slightly libertarian while Trump is strongly authoritarian. That's the Y axis on the left-right continuum that gets overlooked.

    I'd put HRC smack in the middle of Kasich and Sanders.

    To TT's point, Trump's popularity is in great part due to his authoritarian bent. A lot of folks want a daddy figure who will tell them what to do and fix their problems for them.
