I've seen the opening credits of Dallas. Cattle ranching is big, too.

Texas wants to secede because that's the only chance the Longhorns have of winning a national title.

But wouldn't Baylor and TCU still beat Texas?

Having one of the largest states in the country break away would not be good for anyone. Some people just want to go, "DERP! Texas! Look at the hicks!" without considering that, yes, Texas contributes a hell of a lot to our economy and having them suddenly be not part of the U.S. would not be a beneficial development.
There's no winners in that scenario, obviously. I never claimed there would be, or that it's a good idea. We settled that 150 years ago.

We're getting off track here. My original argument was, assuming we're in a vacuum and any state can just make like Kramer and say, "We're out!" with no consequences — which obviously is not the case in reality, but just play along here — there are maybe three or four states that could legitimately have a chance to do it successfully and become a strong nation on their own.
If you rank the 50 states in order of ability to become their own country and succeed, Texas has the prerequisites to provide a lot of what you want in a first-world, well-rounded country that could fend for itself. For the sake of this discussion we'll wipe the slate clean on any existing debt or budget deficits and let them start fresh.
    1) Borders that are not landlocked by other states, as well as a large coastline to foster international trade.
    2) Several large, modern cities.
    3) A strong agricultural base.
    4) Large, proven energy reserves that can help it be self-sufficient and provide a major export.
    5) A diverse economy.
    6) A large, skilled population base. That Texans tend to embrace their heritage as a once-idependent nation is an intangible asset that's not necessary for this discussion, but helpful in their case.
    7) A strong transportation infrastructure.

And for the record, the only other states I'd put on this list are California and Alaska (it already is kind of its own country up there). There's a few others, like Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey (a surprisingly diverse landscape if you've ever been there) that would have varying degrees of success.

The hypotheticals on a Texas secession are fun. Good luck defending yourself when Uncle Sam packs up all his military equipment and leaves Texas with a few bass boats, skiffs and party barges for a Navy. And who is going to pay for repairs next time Houston floods if FEMA doesn't? Throw a few embargos on them and kick the Cowboys and Texans out of the NFL and they'll beg to get back in.

Hypothetically if Texas did secede and Trump was elected president, would he build a wall along the Texas-Oklahoma border to keep out the Mexicans who want to cross the border into the USA through the Republic of Texas? :)

Defend yourself from who? Is there someone itching to attack Texas?
