  1. Thanks. There's lots of misinformation out there. The thing about this plae is, it is a place where we can learn and listen to other opinions as well as facts, which is what I try to do. At least we know now that the paper doesn't have any internal issues and a hire is forethcoming. That's good news.

Yeah, but you attacked the city -- doesn't that count for something? If you don't want to be attacked, don't criticize. Otherwise, be prepared to take what and when you give.

  3. I'm quite prepared to defend myself and to be criticized. It's the cursing and obscenities that devalue the conversation, which I have yet to do but have been done to. I can handle anything you throw at me, I just don't care to be cursed.

I said it would be a minority hire - and it was.

so what's wrong with a "minority" hire if he/she was the best candidate? you act as if these jobs are just arbitrarily given to the first black/aisan/hispanic/woman that walks in the door. get a grip man.

I've got no problem with a minority hire or a female hire or whatever as long as it was the best hire. But I'm tired of these jobs that are filled just to meet quotas.
I hope that wasn't the case in this job. But if that's how editors are going to fill jobs -- and I'm not just talking about this one -- I wish they'd just say in the ad: "Qualified white males need not apply."

Great, another diversity in the newsroom threadjack.

  11. Well, that's obviously not going to happen. But I see what you're saying.

I have no problem with staffs trying to diversify, particularly older staffs that have very little turnover (like New Orleans). But you do wish they could do so without making other people waste their time.

On another note, about the word "qualified"... Isn't it possible that New Orleans got 100 applicants and, say, 75 of them were "qualified" for the job? Just because many "qualified" white applicants didn't get the job, doesn't mean the minority applicant who got the job wasn't qualified.
