How can you catch illegal immigrants, then?

  3. Hypothetical please?

Actually you don't, and you just proved it.

You forgot the states along the northern border. Because, you know, that's how all the real threats to the country get in. [/napolitano] ::)

I'm not happy about it. I spent a lot of money and time proving my claim to citizenship. In my more facetious moments, I wish I had known I only needed to sneak across the border and have the bleeding hearts take up my cause.

In much of the country, tradespeople and child-care types, even if their relatives came over on the Mayflower, are more than happy to have you pay them in cash so it's off the books.

  8. Can someone give me a hypothetical situation in which this wonderful law is enforceable?

If they catch them in a drug bust, or a prostitution bust, perhaps.

Don't need the new law for that.

You're contradicting yourself. If all I have in my pockets is cash and my keys, how am I supposed to prove I have one without going home to get it? How am I supposed to be able to "show one when asked" if I don't have it on me at all times? That's the same logic as "you only cover my team when they lose" - it assumes I know in advance when I'm going to be asked to show it. Life doesn't work that way.

Driving without a license is a crime, IIRC.

Also, how do you get these cards to the homeless and mentally ill who very well may not have their SS documentation any more and probably won't be able to prove their citizenship any more than an illegal immigrant? How do you make sure they have then on them at all times for when people want to check? After all, the DID bag lady in New York could be an illegal immigrant from Guatemala or she could have been born at her mom's house in Queens.

You catch them in one of those busts, then ask to see their ID. If they are illegal, add that to the other charges.
