OK, 14 pages is a lot. I didn't read through this all, so sorry if someone asked this.
But what are the odds that 5 police officers manhandling a squirming guy to get cuffs on him risk doing more damage to him than a low taser zap? I really don't know.

He was warned about being tased. He was told to cease struggling or the taser was next. How do we know he was warned: "Don't tase me, bro!"
He chose not to heed the warning.
The cops were doing their job. They did those jobs well.

Some of you advocating the taser seem to miss the much larger point because you can't let go of the fact that Andrew Meyer appears to be a giant douche. It's not about tasering HIM necessarily. It's about the next guy. If you use the taser in situations where it clearly is not required, you're that much more likely to use it the next time. All this smug cheering for the cops using violence on a student makes me queesy. Is being a cop is a difficult, thankless job? Absolutely. But the fact that so many people today are advocating the use of excessive force in a situation as benign as this scares me. If it's ok to taser some jackass when you, and five other cops, have him pinned to the ground because he won't stop grandstanding, then pretty soon, it's ok to taser kids when they won't leave the bar at 1:59 a.m. and they start making wiseass comments. School president refuses to answer questions about a budget scandal and so the student journalists wait in his driveway to try and get a comment? Taser their ass. Why not? They're trespassing, right?

It's not about Andrew Meyer. Stop focusing on him, because you're missing the point. It's about making it acceptable for the cops to taser the next guy, while we stand and applaud like the crowd in the Colosseum thinking "that will never be me."

Exactly DD- college students act stupid sometimes. They always have. Its their time to grow as human beings on their own.
If they act stupid should they be tasered? This is a dangerous precedent.

Look what happened to that poor girl outide Fenway after the Sox won series. Her death was accidental , but the cops should have never fired the pepper spay guns in the first place.

If you want to taser for stupid perhaps they should keep one at the Capital.

  5. I say this not because of any political belief but because of cynicism in general...
Are we sure one taser would be enough?

As I read it ... the kid reportedly tells the cops afterward that they did nothing wrong. But now the kid is turning into a celebrity because of what the cops did.

    Something doesn't add up here.

But, according to the story, he only said that when the cameras were gone and he was alone with them. He screams and puts on a show when he sees the cameras.

I think its obvious what this guy's motives were. And he's gotten what he wanted beyond his wildest dreams because of the stupid decision to unnecessarily taser him. The temporary pain of that taser was nothing compared to all this much-craved attention, publicity (and probably money) he'll be getting off this.

Aside: strawmen not withstanding, this topic is the straw that stirs the shizzle.

Just spoke with a friend in Japan, advising him to watch the video. Oh, he's already seen it, it's a big topic of the day there, especially among the young folk. Loud-mouthed idiot? Police brutality? And everything in between.

What hath Youtube wrought? The old_tony Bible, not the least of these.

What is difference between Mike Vick sitting back to enjoy watching dogs be electrocuted and certain posters on here sitting back and enjoying a video of a human being have volts of electricity sent through him?

    Answer: nothing. FACT.

Wonder what would happen if a University of Ottawa student questioned Steven Harper?

Alls I know is that Joe Stalin would have handled this better. There would be no video and no body.

Kid was a jerk. Should have left and when he didn't they had enough cops to carry him out the door and deal with him.
