Estimated 1,465 Americans killed in D-Day action. 8,000 in the past ~ 50 years. Staggering toll in one day and one geographically tight space.

FWIW, the Allied staff estimate of 10,000 total casualties (not KIA, all casualties) on D-Day was almost right on the money. That's according to Omar Bradley's memoirs.

Not to dismiss any particular report, but I do wonder how much misinformation/propaganda is being pushed through the internet. Seems to be an awful lot of "Ivan Stuck In The Mud" type stuff.

Yeah, that "Russkies stuck in the elevator" thing has been going around for 36 hours.

Any follow up? Were they captured? Killed? Gun battle?

Well, the background reports of the US Defense Dept. and the British Ministry of Defense, done daily, indicate that at present the war is at close to a standstill and that the Ukrainians still possess active airpower and air defenses. That's been their assessment for the last 2-3 days. Of course there's a lot of propaganda. This is a war. The night of Pearl Harbor, America's most popular news broadcaster, H.V. Kaltenborn (great name, BTW) told his audience of millions it'd be like three days before the US fleet was bombarding Tokyo in response. He didn't know any better. He had no facts. It was a war.

And most of those probably came from Omaha Beach. At a couple of the other beaches the American troops rolled onto shore and got a little ways inland before firing a shot.

Wall St. Journal is reporting Russia is recruiting Syrian mercenaries for use in urban warfare. 1. Looking for people more than willing to commit atrocities. 2. Own troops losing stomach for the fight. 3. Few if any of those Syrians will ever return home.

Would any mercenary, who was in it for the money, sign up? What's Russia going to pay with?
